Local Man Recalls Gettysburg Trip
Editor’s Note: Even as we celebrate our independence this week, the country also recently marked another significant anniversary in American history: the 160th anniversary of the famous Battle of Gettysburg. It was also the ten-year anniversary of a special trip to the battle site by David Christenson of Britton. Below, Christenson shares what led him to that fateful site and the journal entries he wrote during his emotional trip.

Rollercoaster Of Moisture, Nice-Looking Crops
After a near record-breaking snowfall this past winter, the spring looked a little uncertain for planting. Follow that up with some very dry and hot conditions in the next couple of months, and it seems like the extreme swings would lead to headaches and worry for producers in northeast South Dakota and beyond. Luckily, Mother Nature pulled through again with recent rains and local experts agree that crops are looking pretty promising as we pass the Fourth of July.

Local Catholic Churches Set To Reorganize Soon
As originally reported in the Reporter and Farmer Additional reporting by the Marshall County Journal Starting right after the July 4th holiday, a major reorganization of Catholic parishes will occur within the Diocese of Sioux Falls. This will have a major impact on houses of worship throughout northeastern South Dakota, including in Britton and Eden, though less immediate effect in the next several months. The ultimate goal is to provide stability over the next decade.

James Regional Principal Of Year
A local educator was recently recognized on a state level at the annual professional development conference put on by the South Dakota Elementary Principals’ Association and the SD Association of Secondary School Principals. Britton-Hecla’s Carrie James was named the Region 4 High School Principal of the Year.

County Promoting Courthouse Bond
Marshall County’s efforts to engage voters in the upcoming courthouse bond election are now well underway. An informational pamphlet was mailed to everyone in the county last week, and early this week, five public meetings were held in various towns around the county.

Knebel A Fort Sisseton Fixture For 24 Years
LeRon Knebel says he can only watch so many episodes of “Gunsmoke” before he gets bored. At age 79, you’d expect Knebel to have mostly taken up the rocking chair and to be quietly enjoying his golden years. But not so for this well-known Marshall County resident. In fact, Knebel is in the midst of 24 summers working for the South Dakota State Parks and is still enjoying every minute of it.
