Editor’s Note: Even as we celebrate our independence this week, the country also recently marked another significant anniversary in American history: the 160th anniversary of the famous Battle of Gettysburg. It was also the ten-year anniversary of a special trip to the battle site by David Christenson of Britton. Below, Christenson shares what led him to that fateful site and the journal entries he wrote during his emotional trip.

Local Catholic Churches Set To Reorganize Soon

As originally reported in the Reporter and Farmer Additional reporting by the Marshall County Journal Starting right after the July 4th holiday, a major reorganization of Catholic parishes will occur within the Diocese of Sioux Falls. This will have a major impact on houses of worship throughout northeastern South Dakota, including in Britton and Eden, though less immediate effect in the next several months. The ultimate goal is to provide stability over the next decade.

Owing to a career in the auction business that spans 45 plus years, Britton native Randy Owen, was recently inducted into the South Dakota Auctioneer’s Hall of Fame.

James Regional Principal Of Year

Britton-Hecla High School Principal Carrie James was recently named the Region 4 High School Principal of the Year. James is pictured with (left) Region 7 winner, Pete Wilson, Sturgis Brown High School and (right) Region 5 winner Kelly Messmer, Harding County High School.

A local educator was recently recognized on a state level at the annual professional development conference put on by the South Dakota Elementary Principals’ Association and the SD Association of Secondary School Principals. Britton-Hecla’s Carrie James was named the Region 4 High School Principal of the Year.
