WANDA LEE (LARSON) HEURUNG

Wanda Lee (Larson) Heurung, age 79, of Brooklyn Park, MN passed away August 16, 2020 in her home and with family by her side, following a courageous battle against cancer. A Celebration of Life and interment will be held at a later date.

Wanda was born in Britton, South Dakota in 1941, the 6th of 8 children. She was a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation and was immensely proud of her Native American roots. Her teen-aged years were spent in Minnesota where she worked as a nanny until she graduated from high school. A few years later, she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Heurung. They married, settled in Brooklyn Park and welcomed their only child, a daughter. While their immediate family was small, Bill and Wanda believed that family was defined by love, not blood, and thus their family circle was large. Over the years, Wanda worked many jobs. When she was not working, she was often volunteering and helping others – activities both she and Bill were passionate about. She found great joy in being a wife and mother and, largely influenced by having lost her own mother at a young age, together with Bill, provided a home and the love that only a parent can to 45 foster children.

Wanda was a high-energy woman who never accepted defeat. She loved to laugh and was quick to find the humor in almost any situation. She had varied interests but no matter what she did, doing it with Bill made it that much better. Above all else, Wanda loved her family. She was more than just a mother to her daughter - she was a best friend and role model. Her niece describes her as “the best auntie ever” and she was affectionately referred to as “Nanny“ or “Gramma” by the neighborhood children.

Wanda will be remembered fondly for her commitment to family and pride in her Native American ancestry; for her strength, tenacity, and fortitude; for her positive attitude, compassion, and kind-hearted nature; and for her generosity and endless capacity to love and help others.

Survived by daughter, Jodi Heurung (Eric & Lauren Stendahl), siblings James Larson, Loretta Mondry (Ernest, deceased), Alton Larson (Kathy) as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by husband of 57 years, William “Bill” Heurung; siblings Leroy “Duke” Larson (Betty Lee), Pernel “Penny” Larson Waage (Bruce), Monica Laska (Henry, Jr), Paul Larson (Sheryl) and parents James and Evelyn Larson.
