SARAH MONROE

The memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Sarah Monroe was held today, Wednesday, December 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John de Britto Catholic Church in Britton. Rev. Fr. Albert Cizewski celebrated the mass. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Britton Cemetery.

Sarah passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at Marshall County Healthcare Center at the age of 84, with her family at her side.

Her arrangements have been entrusted to the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Sarah Ann Boelte was born on January 7, 1935, in News Ferry, VA, to Henry and Annie (Shields) Boelte, Sr. at Redfield Plantation. As a youngster, she lived in a log cabin in Halifax County, and in the late 1930’s moved with her family to Waverly, VA. They moved to Norfolk, VA, in 1940; and she graduated from Norview High School.

While roller skating, Sarah met a young man by the name of Archie Monroe. They were married on October 10, 1953. They made their home in Virginia for a few years and moved to Britton in 1955. Sarah worked as a cook and waitress at Tom’s Drive In for a while, and then became her husband’s able assistant in the operation of the Dutch Maid Bakery in Britton, which they owned until 1971. Sarah then worked at the Marshall County Assessor’s office and later the Britton Journal. In 1990, they moved to Forbes, ND, and they managed Elm Lake Resort until 1996. They retired to “The Ponderosa” south of Ellendale. At that time, Sarah helped out part-time at her son’s eatery in Ellendale, “Nellie’s Drive In” and also at NoDak. Archie passed away October 1, 2001, and shortly after that, Sarah moved to Britton and has made it her home since that time.

Sarah was a member of St. John de Britto Catholic Church and was part of the Altar Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary and belonged to a whist club. In her leisure time, Sarah loved to do puzzles of any kind, especially word puzzles. She enjoyed adult coloring books, and had recently taken up making loomed hot pad holders which she gave as gifts to family and friends.

Every morning, usually around 6:00 a.m., Sarah would send out an email to all of her family members, including such things as what she’d been doing, anyone’s birthday or anniversary that day, an inspirational quote, and of course, what the weather was doing! In addition to her daily email blast, Sarah also met her ladies group for coffee. She was an avid Facebooker, and enjoyed watching items on E-bay. For many years, Sarah would bake Christmas breads for every member of her family – banana, lemon poppy seed, pumpkin chocolate chip, apple and zucchini bread – treats that will be long remembered by all who received them!

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Debbie (Alan Larson) Thorsness of Gwinner, ND, Cyndy (Paul Thayer) Grandpre of Britton, Bob (Theresa) Monroe of Philadelphia, PA, Marie (Russ) Marlow of Britton, Tom (Lorie) Monroe of Ellendale, ND, Jim (Lynelle) Monroe of Ellendale, Mary Thayer of Milbank, and Susan (Kevin) Jones of Britton; her grandchildren, Danielle (Doug) Stahl, Dawn Thorsness, Kerry Bahr, Justin (Andrea) Bahr, Jessica (Ryan) Remily, Andrew (Katy) Mills, Dakota Monroe, Nicki (Steve) Lentsch, Christopher Rasmussen, Jamie (Kristi) Marlow, Travis (Gina) Marlow, Brandon (Lacey) Marlow, Chelsea (Rich) Wolcott, Jeremy (Chelsey) Monroe, Adam Monroe, Laken Atkinson, Tyler (Sheresa) Thayer, Landon (Kristen) Thayer, Craig Jones, K.C.
