MERNIE R. OLSON

Mernie R. Olson, 89, Langford, died on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 11, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Langford, with Pastor Ramona Hayes officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Langford, at a later date.

Mernie was born in Independence Township in Day County, SD, to Thomas S. and Alma (Stave) Olson. He was confirmed at Falnes Lutheran Church in rural Langford. In the early years he worked at various jobs such as driving bus, construction and working for area farmers. He was drafted into the military branch of Army Air Force 101st Air Born.

He married Juliene Kwasniewski and to this union two daughters were born, Kathleen and Joan.

Mernie married Joyce M. Carter on January 7, 1961, in Langford. They spent time working in Iowa, Minnesota and DeSmet, SD. They returned to Day County to raise their family on the farm. They farmed with his dad and his brother Bernard, and milked cows. He loved plowing the fields, smelling the fresh dirt turning over. He enjoyed driving to visit family, with snowstorms his favorite time to go!

He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed antique tractors, steam engines, and older cars. He was a lifelong member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Langford and belonged to the American Legion.

Grateful for having shared Mernie’s life are his wife Joyce Olson; sons Ole T. and Lorna Olson, Pierpont, Jerome and Denise Olson, Langford, Reuben and Angelina Olson, Redfield, and Nels and Marsha Olson, Aberdeen; grandchildren Joshua L. and Patti Olson, Breana Olson, Jonie Olson, Katie Olson, and April Olson; four great-grandchildren; siblings Amy Baule, Evelyn Olson, Thelma Dutenhoffer, Elsie Reinhart, Opal and Gary Jordan, and Martin Harty.

Preceding Mernie in death are parents Thomas S. and Alma Olson; siblings Junior Olson, Ole TA Olson, Christine Harty, and Bernard Olson.
