The Mass of Christian Burial for Joyce Wegleitner was held on Saturday, November 2, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton. Rev. Fr. Tom Hartman officiated and interment was in Sunset Memorial Gardens of Aberdeen under the direction of the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Joyce passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton at the age of 85, with her family at her side.

Joyce Helen Tichy was born on October 18, 1934, to Adolph and Amelia Wagner Tichy on a farm south of Dante, SD. She was the youngest of six children, and at the age of nine months went to live with her grandparents in Wagner, SD. She also lived in Academy, SD, and attended country schools through the eighth grade.

She earned money by picking ears of corn in the fields after school and on Saturdays with her horse drawn wagon. Eventually she had saved enough to buy a cedar chest.

While her brother Jerry was serving in the Korean War, she asked him to send her the name of a soldier, so she could have a pen pal. He suggested Paul Wegleitner. They exchanged many letters until she received the sad news that he had been killed in action. Joyce sent a sympathy card to his parents, and Paul’s brother Martin saw the letter, and started corresponding with Joyce. Eventually they met and were married on February 10, 1954.

They made their first home on a farm southeast of Amherst where Ruth, Wayne, and Ron were born. A short time later they moved to a farm southwest of Langford where Rita, Don, and Arlene joined the family. They remained on that farm until moving into Langford in 2000. Martin passed away on December 24, 2003, and Joyce continued to make her home in Langford.

In 2015, Joyce moved to Primrose Cottages in Aberdeen and remained there until becoming a resident at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton in July of 2018.

She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton, and over the years had been active in the Altar Society. Joyce did beautiful embroidery handwork. She enjoyed gardening and was especially fond of raising flowers. She was a wonderful homemaker and did lots of canning and baking.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Ron (Tam) Wegleitner, Claremont, Ruth (Kevin) Dinger, St. Paul Park, MN, Wayne (Karen) Wegleitner, Langford, Rita (Richard) Bonahoom, Cottage Grove, MN, Donald (Becky) Wegleitner, Claremont, and Arlene Drayna, Oakdale, MN; her grandchildren, Justin (Jen) Wegleitner, Gabe Wegleitner, Nick Wegleitner, Sara (Robb) Kraft, Shaun Dinger, Andy (Becky) Dinger, Kayla (Ryan) Hastings, Christopher (McKenzie) Wegleitner, KC (Shannon) Wegleitner, Vanessa (Patrick) Hartley, Bridget (Garret Johnson) Bonahoom, Andrea (Shawn) Engelmann, Allison (Dan) Hamik, April Wegleitner, Lukas Drayna, Zachary Drayna; 13 greatgrandchildren; a brother, Charles Tichy; and a sister, Lucille Kostel.

Preceding her in death were her parents and three brothers, Ernest, Jerry, and Jim Tichy.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Ron Wegleitner, 40703 198th St., Claremont, SD 57432.
