The memorial service for Darwin Olson was held on Monday, October 1, at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church of rural Kidder. Pastor Terrill Sorensen officiated. A private family interment in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery preceded the service.
Darwin Merrill Olson passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 11:25 a.m. after a brief time in the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton. Three of his six children were fortunate to be by his bedside.
Darwin was born on May 22, 1925, on the family farm in White Township. Darwin and his brother Dwayne were twin sons of Peter and Lucy (Lea) Olson.
Darwin graduated from Kidder High School, and later married Evelyn Stavick in 1944. Noteworthy among his many talents and interests, Darwin bought and proudly ran the Standard Gas Station (now known as Cliff’s) in Britton in the early 1950s. Also, one of Darwin’s fondest phases of life was working as resident camp manager at Outlaw Ranch Lutheran Camp in the Black Hills from 1967-74. Darwin and Evelyn divorced in 1971, and Darwin returned to Britton in 1974 and worked in a variety of positions before opening Darwin’s Small Engine and Repair Shop. His trustworthiness and talent as a mechanic drew customers from around the region. Darwin was known for his integrity, kindness, and good humor. He was married to Alice (Vander Vorst) Olson from 1975-2005.
Darwin is survived by his children, Donna, Deanna, Kay, Brian (Laurie), Brent and Karryn (Krishna Ramanujan), his step-children, grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dwayne, first wife Evelyn, a son-in-law, a grandson, and a great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials may be sent in Darwin’s name to the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church cemetery fund, 10302 427 Avenue, Kidder, South Dakota 57430.
The Price Funeral Chapel of Britton assisted the family with arrangements.
