Havana, ND: Darwin Brakke, 81 of Havana, ND passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at home with his loving wife, Pearl of 30 years and family by his side. Pearl comforted and lovingly cared for him in his last few months.

Darwin was born on November 29, 1938 in Havana, ND to David and Adeline (Bokken) Brakke. He attended school in Veblen, SD then transferred to Rutland for his high school days, graduating in 1957. He married Kathleen Bauman on October 28, 1957 and together they had four children. On June 16, 1990, he married Pearl Parrow.

Darwin lived a full life and had a passion for the outdoors. He as an avid hunter and fisherman with many trophies. Darwin was one of the founders and original members of the Rutland Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed gardening, tending to his chickens and spending time with his dogs. He also enjoyed a good book and loved watching sports and old western movies. He created art with puzzles that were admired by family and friends. He worked various jobs such as a bar owner, excavator and a loader operator at Mahrer Construction for many years.

Darwin is survived by his wife, Pearl of Havana, ND; his children, Darby (Robert Sebree) Brakke of Los Angeles, CA, Jesse Brakke of Rutland, ND, and Janelle Brakke of Fargo, ND; Vernon Parrow of St. Paul, MN, Michelle Edwards (John Lang) of Forman, ND, and Becky Parrow (Don Miller) of Havana, ND; son-in-law, Steve Thorfinnson, Ft. Ransom, ND; proud grandfather to Kaia (Kyle) Mahrer of Rutland, ND, James (Sydney) Brakke of Somerset, WI, Claire (Alex) Brakke of Madison, WI, Colin Rabenberg of Britton, SD, Tyler Rabenberg of Britton, SD, Jackson Edwards of Forman, ND, Darci Parrow of Forman, ND and Lucas Parrow of Forman, ND; he cherished his role of greatgrandfather to Brody, Julia, Kaitlyn, and Adalyn Mahrer of Rutland, ND; one sister, Janice Christenson of Rutland, ND; and he will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Julie Thorfinnson; great-granddaughter, Aunika Mahrer; daughter-in-law, Michelle Brakke; two brothers: Deane Brakke and Wayne Brakke; and sister-in-law, Joan Brakke.

Due to extenuating circumstances, a private burial for immediate family will be held in Rutland, North Dakota. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. We invite everyone to lift their glass in a toast and remember this loving man, the life he led and the lives that he touched.
