Braves Drop Two In Week

The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team dropped a pair of decision in the past week to Waubay-Summit 7234 on Monday and Clark-Willow Lake 63-35 on Thursday.

Coach Troy Knecht’s squad took a 4-14 record to Hamlin last night Tuesday and will wrap up regular season play at Groton on Friday. Region 1B tournament play will begin on Monday, Feb. 26.

Waubay-Summit 72 Britton-Hecla 34

Waubay-Summit exploded for 44 first half points, leading by 27 at intermission, and Britton-Hecla was not able to make a second half run.

Despite a 22-point opening period, the Braves hung in the game with 12 of their own. Daniel Person hit a pair of buckets and four other players had two points each. But Waverly-South Shore kept up its scoring pace with another 22-point second period on thrtee treys and a conventional three-point play, while the Braves managed just three hoops.

The visitors quickly erased any B-H ideas of a come back bid by hitting three straight treys to open the third period and go on top 53-17.

Dawson Treeby led the Braves with 10 points.

Clark-Willow Lake 63 Britton-Hecla 35

Clark-Willow Lake stretched a 10-point first period lead to 23 at halftime and padded that margin in the second half.

Daniel Person led the Braves with 11 points and seven rebounds. Jaxon Zuehlke added seven counters and seven boards.

“We played with Clark-Willow Lake for most of the first quarter despite Having two starters on the bench two minutes into the game,” said Knecht. “If we could’ve made some buckets early on I think this game ends a lot differently. “We’ve had a lot of nights where we’ve shot poorly and this was another one. Our offensive execution was really pretty good. Executing the shots, however, has been our Achilles. We out-rebounded them and got to the free throw line twice as much, but the game comes down to scoring in the end. I think we are taking some huge strides and seeing things a lot more clearly despite our shooting woes.”
