WILLIAM “BUTCH” WINSON JR.

WILLIAM “BUTCH” WINSON JR.

William “Butch” Winson Jr. passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton at the age of 68, with his loving wife, Kathy, by his side.

Butch Winson was born March 6, 1953, to Billy and Audrey (Flagtvedt) Winson. Butch spent his childhood creating memories in Pierpont with his two brothers and three sisters. Butch is remembered as a mischievous boy with a twinkle in his eye, and he and his siblings loved to share their childhood memories at holiday gatherings. The jury is still out as to how factual their stories were, but they were always good for a laugh.

Butch married Kathy Johnson, the love of his life, on November 4, 1972. They celebrated 49 years together, most in Britton, SD. Butch spent six years in the National Guard. He was a gifted mechanic who could often be found in the garage tuning up one of many vehicles.

With Kathy by his side, Butch built six hot rods. There was nothing he couldn’t take apart and put back together again. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, logging many hours in the field or on the water with family and friends.

Per Butch’s request, no formal funeral will be held. Instead, Butch requested that everyone make the time to do something they love with the people they love.

Butch loved his family very much and cherished the time spent together. At family gatherings, Uncle Butchie could always be found with kids on his lap, a smile on his face, and a story to tell.

Butch is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathy (Johnson) Winson; siblings: Julie (Keith) Hupke, Langford; Janie Winson, Aberdeen; Kari (Craig) Hewitt, Langford; Jim (Lisa) Winson, Webster; sister-in-law Kaye (Joe) Cameron, Pierpont; brother-in-law Keith (Veronica) Johnson, Warner; 18 nieces and nephews; and 36 great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents: Billy and Audrey Winson; his grandparents: William and Nora (Young) Winson and Adolph and Henrietta (Tople) Flagtvedt; a brother, Tom Winson; and a sister-in-law, Becky Winson.

Butch received excellent care during his battle, and his family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful doctors, nurses, and other caregivers who provided such excellent care to both him and Kathy over the past several years.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Kathy Winson – PO Box 600 – Britton, SD 57430.
