WAYNE KILKER

Wayne Edward Kilker, age 82, of Britton, South Dakota, passed away on January 9, 2024, in Bulverde, Texas.

He was a loving father, husband and friend, known for his passion for learning and experiencing life. Wayne encouraged his children to explore the world and seize every opportunity, just as he did throughout his career and life in general.

Born on September 28, 1941, in Britton, South Dakota, Wayne embarked on a remarkable journey as a Civil Engineer, specializing in soils and tunnels. He served for two years in the Peace Corps in Columbia, South America, before dedicating his entire life to his profession. Wayne’s work took him to various countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Korea and many states within the United States. Notable projects he contributed to include nuclear power plant tunnels, water desalination and the Boston Harbor Cleanup facility. In addition to his successful career, Wayne possessed a thirst for knowledge and adventure. He was an avid traveler, constantly exploring new destinations. His love for reading was insatiable, as he delved into a wide range of subjects. Wayne’s curiosity knew no bounds and he utilized the internet to instantly satisfy his numerous inquiries. In his younger years, he enjoyed biking, running, snow skiing and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Wayne leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy; and his children, Emily and friend, Darin Lambeth, Martin Balcom and wife, Sandy, Stephanie Soileau and fiancé, Michael Saucedo and Heather Rosenberg and friend, Paul Collins. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Matt Abbott, Michael Balcom, David Balcom, Kate Soileau, Carly Soileau and Oliver Rosenberg, as well as four great-grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his stepson, Michael Haukedalan and his wife, Leslie Merkie.

Wayne’s educational journey began in Britton, South Dakota, where he attended primary and high school. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University, earning a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at a later date. His legacy of curiosity, dedication and love will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
