He started his education in a small country schoolhouse and graduated from Sisseton High School. He married Doreen Hemmah on August 15, 1971, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton SD. They made their home on the farm in 1974, in the Red Iron Lake Township.

They enjoyed 52 years of marriage, they raised two children and enjoyed spending time with their family. Their home was welcoming to all, and all who knew the farm, knew was a place of laughter and love. Terry enlisted in the Navy in 1970 and had a desire to serve his country but was discharged due to an unforeseen injury. He then became a man of many hats working for area farmers in their fields and worked cattle for ranchers. He raised some of his own livestock throughout the years on the farm. He worked on Road Construction and even fought the big fire in Yellowstone back in 1988 working alongside Francis “Punchie” Charging Cloud. Earning and becoming a national fire fighter. He enjoyed working alongside his dad logging in the Black Hills. For years he worked on and off, as a logger for Bernie, Bill, and Dave Busskohl, also in the black hills. He then, along with Darrell Ringer, started T&D Tree Services and after a few years, he worked in Lake City as City Maintenance Manager for 20 years before retiring. Terry’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with Doreen going to numerous places fishing and camping. He especially loved traveling to the Black Hills and Medora. He also enjoyed visiting with his friends over morning coffee. Giving grief to all that he could. His sense of humor kept a smile on the faces of all that knew him. He was always willing to lend a hand.
