SANDRA E. FREEMAN

Sandra E. Freeman of Britton, SD, passed away at her home December 22, 2023, at the age of 81. Sandy was born in Winona, MN November 11, 1942, to Arthur E. Avery and Dorothy Alma Louise (Stoltenburg) Avery. She attended schools in Winona, MN, Watertown, Bristol, and Aberdeen, South Dakota, and graduated from Aberdeen Central in 1960. While in high school, Sandy worked at Lacey’s Dairy Bar on South Main. After graduating, she worked in the National Food Store, (National “T”) as a cashier. She married and had two children, Kyle Ackerman and Tammy Ackerman. Sandy worked at 3M while the kids were in high school and college but quit in 1984 and began studying Communication Disorders at Northern State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree, and began working for the Black Hills Special Services Coop as the Speech Therapist in the Hot Springs School System which included two country schools for two years. She then moved to Bowdle and worked for the Oahe Special Education Coop for the schools in Bowdle, Hoven, Tolstoy, two country schools, and Wakpala.

In 1994 Sandy and Wayne Freeman were married in Britton, SD. He was her John Wayne. Lots of rides moving cows, looking for missing cows, doctoring cows! Always some excitement along the way! A trip to the hospital once in a while. Watching meteor showers, Northern Lights, driving all over the country to all the sloughs, looking for the Grebes dancing on the water, the snow geese so thick in the sky it took your breath away. The Humming birds. Thousands of pictures. What fun! Sandy and Wayne took a couple trips. Saw Arches and Grand Canyon. Went skiing at Squaw Valley, and after only a couple runs on the bunny slope, her kids got him to go to the top of the mountain and he made it down with them in one piece.

Besides all the above, there was cross country skiing, reading, carving, painting and looking for “good rocks” in the coulee. There was never enough time for it all. There was family, flying airplaines, marble games, the annual rodeo, The Flame. Friends. Bonita, Donna, Joyce and Larry, Peggy and Dale, Beth, Pam and Brian, Jamie and Tom . . . too many to name here. And of course all her animals. Cats, dogs, horses and more! What would life have been like without all of these? Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Dorothy Avery, brother Chad Avery and his first wife, Alice, and their son Bruce, her sister Candace Lindskov, and brother- in-law Donald Lindskov.

She is survived by her husband Wayne Freeman, Britton, SD, son Kyle and his wife, Shari Ackerman, Dassel, MN, daughter Tammy Ackerman, Biddeford, ME, and sisterin- law Janet (Chad) Avery, Henderson, NV, three nephews, two nieces, and their families.
