During the war the family moved to California, where he attended high school. The family returned to Hecla, SD where he finished high school, graduating in 1946.

After high school Bob started working for his dad at his repair shop. He met Deloris Fetters, daughter of Esther (Hubert) and George Fetters, and they were united in marriage on February 10, 1950 at the Peace Lutheran Church in rural Hecla. They have 5 daughters.

In 1957 Bob started working for Jensen’s in Claremont, SD, then for the Farmers Union Coop. After leaving the Farmers Union, Bob opened Bob Bruns Repair in Houghton, SD, which he operated until he retired. Even after he retired you could find Bob working on cars, trucks and tractors for the local farmers. Come harvest time he would help Wegleitner Farms bring in the corn and beans. He even spent a few summers near King Salmon, AK where he worked as a mechanic for Foster Construction.

Bob and Deloris purchased lake property in 1962 on Clear Lake, where he spent many hours enjoying one of his favorite pastimes, fishing. Like every good fisherman he always had a story to tell about the one that got away. Over the years, Bob made several trips to Canada with his friends and family to go fishing as well. Bob was also an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. He loved playing cards, golfing and working in his basement wood working shop.

He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, where he served as a church board member. Bob was also a volunteer firefighter with the Claremont Fire Department.

In 2015 Bob and Deloris moved to Langford, SD where he resided until January of 2020 when he moved to Wheatcrest Hills in Britton, SD where he lived until the time of his death.
