Michael Ray Bergeson was born November 17, 1949 to Marvin and Ellen (Pederson) Bergeson in Dawson, MN. He attended grade school in Claire City, SD and high school in New Effington, SD. While in high school he worked for various farmers in the area and broke horses for Clint Nickeson. After high school he attended Wahpeton School of Science for one year and Northern State University in Aberdeen for one year for key punch operator. He then enlisted into the US Navy in August 1970 and returned home in 1973.

On August 10, 1974 he married the love of his life Linda Schlekewy at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake City. They made their home by Sisseton and then moved to Claire City. In 1989 they bought Linda’s folks farm where they milked cows and raised pigs. Mike also worked off the farm at the Co-op (Cenex) in Claire City for 47 ½ years (which was his first wife). Mike and Linda were blessed with two children, Mindy Jo and Travis, and then two grandsons.

Family was very important to him. He always made sure his wife, children and grandsons were priority number one and cherished time spent with all of them. He enjoyed teaching his grandsons various duties of farm life including working cattle, haying and fixing equipment.

His enjoyments in life were having coffee with the coffee clan, going to Crystal Springs Rodeo, hanging with friends, camping at Brown County Fair, and attending the grandson’s activities. In earlier years he enjoyed going on trail rides with the family and getting together at all the family gatherings to shoot the bull or playing tricks on people. He was a member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden and a member of the Read-Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington, SD.

Due to his untimely struggle with dementia he spent his last days in the Strand-Kjorsvig Living Center in Roslyn, SD where he received great care from all the staff. Mike passed away Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Strand-Kjorsvig at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 9 days.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda of Lake City; his children, Mindy Jo (Ray) Coffman of Linton, ND and Travis (Cheryl) Bergeson of Lake City; his grandsons, Isaac and Lucas Bergeson; his siblings: Craig Bergeson of Sisseton, SD, Neil (Darla) Bergeson of Sisseton, Faith (Bob) Schoeberl of Lake City and Allen Bergeson of MN; and a number of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and their families.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Marvin and Ellen Bergeson; his in-laws, Leonard and Marcella Schlekewy; and brother-in-law, Roger Buhl.
