Kenneth John Frey was born October 10, 1933, to John and Mabel (Hupke) Frey of Amherst, South Dakota, and born at Langford, South Dakota. He attended the Freeland Rural School a short distance from his childhood home. He then enrolled at Amherst, SD High School and graduated in 1951 with a class of four. Following graduation, he began his farming career. He enjoyed the planting and harvesting of the crops each year. A few dairy cows were milked, and hogs were added to the farm.

As time went by, he married Janet Anderson on February 24, 1968, at the Augustana Lutheran Church in rural Claremont, South Dakota. The couple was blessed with two children, Susan Karels and Mike Frey, whom they raised on their farm northeast of Claremont. He took pride in teaching his children, and eventually the grandchildren, the value of hard work. He enjoyed attending the sporting events and activities of his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren include Dylan and Colin Frey of Claremont and William and Hope Karels of Milbank.

Kenneth was a lifelong member of Zion Reformed Church. He was active as a singer in the choir and men’s quartet throughout his lifetime. His love of music is shared with his children and grandchildren. He was a Sunday School teacher, Youth Group leader and on the Consistory Church Board. He liked to bowl and enjoyed attending the State Bowling Tournaments. Attending the Frey Family Reunion in Montevideo, Minnesota was a highlight for Kenneth. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors, friends, and relatives. He was also known for striking up a conversation with anyone. He had a knack for remembering people’s birthdates and phone numbers. He was a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins and followed the Claremont Honkers and Langford Lions. A special trip included an Amtrak train to the west coast area to visit relatives and attend his daughter Susan’s master’s degree Graduation from Southern Oregon University.

In 1974, he became more involved with milking cows as the focal point of the farm. More registered Holsteins were added to the dairy herd. With son Michael’s return to the family farm following college in 1992, Frey-View Dairy Farm, Inc. was formed as well as another dairy farm expansion. A milking parlor was added to the operation so milking cows became more enjoyable for Kenneth. He became involved with the South Dakota Holstein Association. Kenneth enjoyed hosting and attending the West Central and South Dakota Holstein Association yearly picnics. Kenneth was on the South Detroit Township Board for almost 40 years. He was also on the DHIA (Dairy Herd Improvement Association) board. The Frey farm was selected as the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce Conservation Achievement winner in 1983. Kenneth enjoyed helping with various tasks on the farm well into his 80’s. A special memory was a combine ride with Grandson Dylan at the age of 86. Kenneth was always proud and thankful of the yearly harvest. He served as a 4-H leader for the Friendly Fellows 4-H Club of Claremont for over 15 years. His involvement in 4- H was the foundation for his kids and grandchildren’s participation. Kenneth passed away
