JULIE ANN WINDER

JULIE ANN WINDER

Julie Ann Winder, 82, of Britton, passed away peacefully on April 11th, 2023 at Marshall County Healthcare Center surrounded by family.

Julie was born February 28, 1941 to Frederic “Fritz” and June (Turnbloom) Hanson in Duluth, MN. As a child, she moved to Britton, SD when her family purchased the local drug store, Dakins Pharmacy. She graduated from Britton High School in 1959.

Julie was united in marriage to Jack Winder on November 27th, 1959. They lived in Sisseton for a few years before returning to Britton to purchase her parent’s drug store and home. They made their lifelong home in Britton and were blessed with four children: Kris, Mike, Kathy, and Stacy. Jack passed away in 1998. Later in life, Julie was lucky to share her heart again with a special friend, Howard Jones, until his passing in 2014.

Julie spent her younger years raising her children and working at the drug store. She later worked at Marshall Manor as a CNA and medication aide and Sheldahl Inc. She also turned her creative talents into side jobs as she enjoyed refinishing projects, staining and painting.

Julie was a great historian with an uncanny ability to recall anything about anyone. A short story always weaved its way into a lengthy history lesson about who was related to who, where they lived, and how everything tied together.

Julie had the biggest heart and was always gifting things to others, often to those she barely knew. She often expressed her love for others through her amazing ability to cook. She always made sure each person had their favorite dish to enjoy at every family gathering. No one was left hungry when Julie was around!

Julie found great joy in her family, especially her children and grandchildren. In her prime, she loved golfing and showing off her infamous “shoulder shrug” dance moves to her favorite jazz music. She also enjoyed tending to her garden and decorating her landscaping with all the orange impatiens she could find. She loved watching any show on HGTV and there wasn’t a Taste of Home recipe book around that she hadn’t read from cover to cover.

As Julie’s health declined and she went to live at her daughter’s house, she spent most of her days with her “favorite guy”, her sonin- law Cal. They spent countless hours traveling to medical appointments, catching a bite to eat at Pounders, and watching Sunday afternoon football games. They never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Kris (Joe) Laskarzewski ofAberdeen, Mike (Deb) Winder of Pierre, Kathy (Cal) Carlson of Britton and Stacy (Craig) Hansen of Aberdeen; siblings: Nancy (Stu) Sivertson of Duluth and Marcia Hanson of Duluth; 10 grandchildren: Deidra (Jon) Buchele, Devin Turman, Raegan and Mesa Winder, Kylie, McKenna and Landon Carlson, Brayden, Kennedy and Brooklyn Hansen; 2 great grandchildren: Haylee and Toryn Buchele and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; her brother, Reed; her special friend, Howard; and her son-inlaw Lonnie.

Per Julie’s wishes, there will be no formal service, so her family plans to gather for a cookout in which they will attempt to replicate all their favorite Julie recipes.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Conklin and his staff and Dr. Purintun and the entire care team at Marshall County Healthcare Center for the compassionate care given to our mother over the past year.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Kathy Carlson – PO Box 110 – Britton, SD 57430.
