JOHN W. HICKEY

JOHN W. HICKEY

John W. Hickey passed away Friday, February 2, 2024 at Marshall County Healthcare Center at the age of 80.

John William Hickey died of natural causes at the Marshall County Hospital on February 2, 2024, surrounded by family. John was born on September 28, 1943, in Emmetsburg, Iowa to Charles and Bernice Hickey. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1961 and joined the Navy. After his service, John found his way to Britton, South Dakota, where he met his wife, Marlene Bowman. The two were married on May 16, 1970, and had two daughters. John spent several years helping others and protecting the community as a Marshall County Deputy Sheriff and later worked as a machinist at Hub City Iron in Aberdeen.

John was an avid reader, an experienced fisherman, fantastic cook, and a skilled card shark. He believed that people should learn something new every day. He loved to learn, and he loved to teach. He helped his daughters’ friends with math homework and coached their basketball teams. Having helped raise many of his younger siblings, John always had a knack with children. Being a grandpa was his favorite role. He worked hard to foster a love of reading and fishing in his children and grandchildren, with mixed results.

John was a gifted handyman and a generous neighbor. He was always happy to share his time and his talents with anyone that needed his help. Now, accepting help from others, that was another matter. John was a proud man and fiercely protected his independence. He lived life on his terms and held fast to his convictions. At the same time, he tried not to take life too seriously and was constantly cracking “dad jokes” well before the term was coined.

John is survived by his daughters: Robin (Tony) Cologgi, St. Paul Park, MN; Shannon (Justin) Falon, Baltic, SD; his brother, Charles (Lynette) Hickey, Kearney, NE; his sister, Ellen Castelline, Boise, ID; six grandchildren: Hayley Devine, St. Paul, MN, Jack Cologgi, River Falls, WI, Liberty Falon, Sioux Falls, SD, Darian Falon, Sioux Falls, SD, Kendall Falon, Sioux Falls, SD and Hunter Falon, Sioux Falls, SD; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including Tammy Harrison.

John was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and several brothers and sisters.

The family will hold a private service.

Condolences may be directed to the care of Robin Cologgi – 1446 Dixon Dr. – St. Paul Park, MN 55071.
