GORDON F. ABELS

Gordon Abels died August 14, 2021, at Prairie Heights HealthCare in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was born on November 20, 1937, to John and Mabel (Eisenlohr) Abels in Britton, South Dakota. Gordon graduated from Britton High School in 1955. He attended Wahpeton School of Science for one year and then graduated from the University of Jamestown in 1959, majoring in Physics and Math. He served in the Navy for 3 years. Gordon worked at government weapon testing labs in Aberdeen, Maryland and in Ridgecrest, California.

Gordon’s love of learning was evident in the many classes he took at Northern State University upon his retirement in Aberdeen. He took classes at Northern in the music department ranging from classical, to folk, to ballroom. He enjoyed as well, folk and ballroom dancing. Gordon had an interest in unusual scientific phenomena, including UFO sittings. Gordon was a curious and gentle soul.

His parents preceded him in death, as well as a brother, Harvey; two sisters, Marjorie Ludoph and Lorna Scott; his brothers-in-law, Bob Scott and Jim Hinch.

He is survived by a sister, Joanne Hinch; nephews, Michael Abels, Dan Hinch, and Cordell Scott; nieces, Debby Hinch Pollock and her husband David and Karmel Scott; five grandnephews and three grandnieces.

Services will be held in the fall with internment in the Britton Cemetery.
