CURTIS “CURT” B. SHELDON

CURTIS “CURT” B. SHELDON

Curtis B. “Curt” Sheldon passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022 at Prince of Benedictine Living Community in Ellendale, ND with his family at his side. He was 89 years of age.

It was Curt’s request to have no formal service.

Curtis Blaine Sheldon was born November 18, 1932 in Veblen, SD to Floyd Allen and Marie A. (Spethmann) Sheldon. As a youngster, he moved with his family to Oregon and later Montana where he received his early elementary education. The family returned to the Britton area where he completed his schooling in Sisseton. At the age of 18, he went to work for Thorp Ranch.

On April 4, 1952 Curt was inducted into the U. S. Army. He served as a Sergeant of the Motor Pool while stationed in Germany. On March 9, 1954 he was honorably discharged and returned to Britton.

Curt was united in marriage with Bonnie J. Thayer on September 22, 1954 in Webster. The young couple lived for a few years in Montana and Washington state where Curt worked various jobs. In 1957 they returned to Britton and have made it their home since that time. Curt took a job as a mechanic with Thorp Auto and remained with them until the business was sold in 1982. At that time he started working as a mechanic for Thayer Ford. He worked there until 1985 when he started his own mechanic shop next to his home. He built their three stall garage out of lumber from a house he had torn down, and operated Curt’s Garage until retiring. He was truly a gifted mechanic and could fix nearly anything mechanical.

Curt was never afraid of hard work. In addition to his mechanic work, he also did air conditioner repair work and tree removal. Over the years he had taken down all the trees that were needed to clear the area for First Savings Bank, the Auditorium and the site of the old Kidder Gym in Britton. He also had a soft and caring side. For many years, he and Bonnie lovingly cared for their daughter, Teri in their home. They dedicated a good portion of their lives to seeing that her special needs were met. He had a great fondness for birds and small animals.

In his free time, Curt enjoyed woodworking, especially making birdhouses and outdoor wooden Christmas decorations for the yard. He was a true outdoorsman and avid fisherman. His greatest enjoyment was spending time fishing on White Lake.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Sheldon of Britton; his son, Tim (Dorene) Sheldon of Fredrick, SD; a daughter, Tami Brummund of St. Charles, IL; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his daughter, Teri; and three brothers: Allen, Darrell and Lester Sheldon, and his little white dog, Benji

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Bonnie Sheldon – Box 519 – Britton, SD 57430.
