RANDY OPITZ

Randy Opitz died peacefully on June 1, 2023, in Council Bluffs, IA surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Eden, SD, on November 23, 1940 to Isabel and Stephen Opitz. After graduating from Rosaland High School, he attended Brown Institute in Minneapolis MN where he earned a broadcasting degree. During his radio career, he worked for KJAM in Madison, SD, KODY in North Platte, NE, and KLIX in Twin Falls, ID. Later he had an agency for Shelter Insurance in North Platte, NE.

He and his wife, Ginny, were blessed with 56 years of marriage and two wonderful children, Tim, and Marie. Randy and Ginny enjoyed golfing, traveling, bridge, reading, and wintering in Arizona. He was an avid sports fan and loved playing softball and basketball. He also loved playing his guitar, volunteering, and coaching kids.

He was proceeded in death by an infant son, Christopher, and his brother, Stephen. He is survived by his wife, Ginny, son Tim Opitz of Tokyo, Japan, daughter, Marie (David Huggins) of Council Bluffs, IA, granddaughter, Mallory Huggins of West Des Moines, IA, and sisters: Irma Mork, Del Opitz, Jean Opitz, Carrie Opitz, and Bonnie Larsen.

A celebration of life was held Monday June 5, 2023 from 4-6 pm at the Best Western Plus Inn and Suites, 3201 South Jeffers, North Platte NE 69101.

Tandy was such a wonderful and gentle mentor to me at KODY-FM radio way back in the ‘80s. I am sad to see he is gone. I had always hoped to reconnect with him. Maybe in the next life….
