Walter Roy “Walt” Barr, age 85, of Eden, South Dakota, passed away on September 28, 2026, at the Strand Kjorsvig Living Center in Roslyn, South Dakota. A gentleman in the truest sense of the word, Walt gave freely of his time and himself, never expecting anything in return.

Walt was born on April 15, 1941,inBoston,Massachusetts, to John Frederick Barr and Marie (Roy) Barr. He grew up in Chelsea, Massachusetts. At the end of his junior year of high school he moved to Rochester, New Hampshire, to live with his older brother. There he graduated from Spaulding High School in 1959, and his classmates voted him “Wittiest,” a title that fit him for the rest of his life.

After graduation, Walt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country for 22 years and retired in 1981 as a Master Sergeant. Being a Marine was more than a job to Walt; it was work he truly loved. His service took him to Vietnam, where he earned two Purple Hearts, and to posts in La Paz, Bolivia; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; San Jose, Costa Rica; and Okinawa. After retiring from the Marines, he worked for the U.S. Post Office for another 20 years.

It was on embassy duty in La Paz that Walt met Georgia Pitzl, a secretary with the Foreign Service. In 1963, before he was shipped out to a new post, they were married in La Paz. Together they raised three children, and Walt’s military career gave them a childhood full of travel and good memories. He taught them the values of hard work, honesty, and humility, and the importance of family and education. Later in life, he showed them, by example, the lasting gifts of generosity and endless optimism.

Walt loved the food and spirit of New Orleans, where he lived for almost 30 years, from 1979 to 2008. Yet Eden was always home for this Boston boy. His bond with Eden ran so deep that he convinced Georgia to trade yearround 80-degree weather for South Dakota’s long, cold winters.

In his younger years, Walt enjoyed bowling, tennis, and darts, but in retirement, golf became his passion. The course was his happy place. He kept playing long after his eyesight began to fail, with his golfing buddies helping him find the ball when it strayed into the rough.

Walt was outgoing and welcoming; in his company, no one remained a stranger for long. He looked for the good in people. His desire to give back to the community was reflected in his service as a member of the Eden Lions, VFW, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Marine Corps League.

Family and friends remember him this way: always ready for a laugh, an adventure, and a good time. He had a Marine’s spirit and a big softy’s heart. His kindness and warmth left a mark on everyone he met, and we like to think he’s in Heaven checking with Siri on the weather.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John and Joe Barr; his sister, Maryann Hatch (Barr); and three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Georgia; their three children, Michael Barr (Melanie), Kimberly Barr, and Christopher Barr (Jessica); and six grandchildren, Andrew, Cooper, Alexander, Quinn, Matthew, and James.

Poll: LEGISLATURES GET RAISE South Dakota lawmakers are expected to receive a roughly 3% pay increase next year, bringing their annual salary from $15,970 to about $16,492. Lawmakers’ total compensation can be higher when mileage, living expenses and out of state travel are included, with the average payout per legislator reaching $26,813 during the last fiscal year. The salary increase is tied to a state law that sets legislators’ pay at 20% of South Dakota’s median household income. Do you agree with the roughly 3% increase in pay for South Dakota legislators?
