Coleen Hill was born September 24, 1932, in rural Veblen, SD, to Dannie and Birdell (Halvorson) Hill. She attended rural schools and graduated from Veblen High School. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, and later married. Coleen was very strong in her faith.

She married Sherman O. Halverson on July 3, 1950, at Palestine Church. They raised their family of four children in Veblen, where Sherman was in the grain business. During that time, Coleen worked at Nelson Grocery for around five years, at the bank in Veblen for eight years, and as a paraprofessional at Veblen Elementary School for ten years.

Coleen loved music and spent many years as the church organist. She started playing a pump organ for Palestine Church at the age of 14. Coleen also worked as the assistant high school choir teacher for many years. Through the years she sang and played for countless weddings and funerals. Coleen was truly a gifted musician.

She dearly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Over the years she loved attending her grandsons’ events. Most importantly, she loved being Grandma Coco to her grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and greatgreat- grandchildren. Along with playing music, Coleen also taught piano lessons for many years. She enjoyed reading. Coleen was a talented seamstress, knitter, and crocheter and sewed many of her daughter’s clothes, including a wedding dress and a college graduation dress. Coleen was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, WELCA, book club, and the Senior Citizens.

Coleen passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026, a day after her 94th birthday, at Sanford Broadway Medical Center surrounded by her children.

Grateful for having shared her life are her four children: Tom Halverson of Hot Springs, SD; Conny (Stan) Hope of Rapid City, SD; Dan (Julie) Halverson of Maple Grove, MN; and Janine (George) Flanery of Britton, SD; her grandchildren: Erin (Todd) Hope, Janna Hope, Lindsay Fuhrman, Rachel (Chris) Halverson, David (Ryanne) Flanery, and Jory (Janessa) Flanery; her great-grandchildren: Jorden (Donovan), Tait, Clive, Astrid, Hadley, and Lucas; her greatgreat- grandchildren: Elias, Daniyal, Rowan, Bauer, Lucy, and Jasper; a brother, Willard (Betty) Hill; a sister, Mary Lou Orth; and a number of nieces, nephews, and their families.
