Wayne Axel Buhl was born October 25, 1949 to Axel and Selma (Damgaard) Buhl in Britton, SD.

Wayne passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, September 4, 2026 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD after a courageous 10 year battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Wayne grew up on a farm in rural Lake City. He attended country school in Hamilton Township until 5th grade, then attended school in Britton, SD from 6th grade through graduation in 1967. He then attended NDSSS in Wahpeton, ND for one year before transferring to Northern State College where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Business and a minor in Math. He attended Presentation College and obtained a Nursing Home Administration degree.

On March 7, 1979 he married Kim Marie Geffre in Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Lake City, SD. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Jodi Marie, Traci Nicole and Shelly Jo. Wayne farmed on the family farm for many years and after retiring from farming, he worked for Britton Equipment and Melroe Bobcat in Gwinner, ND.

Wayne was a member of Lake City Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church in Britton. He served on both the church councils for many years. He also was a board member at the Marshall County Healthcare Center, the Norstar Credit Union Board, the USDA Farm Service Agency, was a council member for the Lake City Town Board and was the chairman for the Marshall County Republicans for 30+ years. He was a proud member of the Britton Lions Club.

Wayne obtained his real estate license and enjoyed showing clients the beautiful scenery around the Lake City area.

In his younger years Wayne was an avid bowler. He was happiest when in a boat fishing, or laying in a cornfield waiting for geese to fly over. He loved to golf at Royview and visit with friends over coffee or a drink at the Lake City Municipal. He also loved a good card game, cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins and dancing to his favorite music. He was a strong supporter of his daughters’ sports activities and coached their 5th and 6th grade basketball teams.

The past few years Wayne’s greatest joy was watching his grandchildren in all of their activities.

Wayne had a wonderful smile, loved visiting, and he cherished all of his family and friends. He will be truly missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 47 years, Kim; his daughters Jodi (Steve) Zubke and Shelly (Kyle) Roth and four grandchildren, Mackenzie Zubke, Bennett, Logan and Carter Roth; a sister, Phyllis Rein; a brother, Jerome (Bonnie) Buhl; mother and father-in-law, Marie and Gordon Geffre; sistersin-law, Lana (Jay) Steger, Tammy (Bill) Cantalope and Lori (Kerry) Drusch; and many special nieces and nephews and their families.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Axel and Selma; his daughter, Traci; and his grandson, Brayden Zubke.
