ROBERT J. OLSON
ROBERT J. OLSON

Bob worked beside his Uncle Leonard Halverson farming, where he learned the value of hard work and dedication. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, spending much of his two years in Germany. Bob often shared stories from his time overseas and jokingly remarked that Germany had “real beer,” a memory that brought smiles to those that knew him.
Following his military service, Bob moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he pursued training as a barber. He later worked in Rochester, MN continuing his barber career. Throughout his working years Bob held a variety of positions, including work at a creamery and in livestock trading. No matter the job, he was known for his reliability, honesty, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
In 1960, Bob married Phyllis Jensen and together were blessed with 3 sons: Douglas, Mitch and Curtis. In 1974 Bob married Shirley (Hoffman) and gained four step-children: Robert, Steven, Scott and Julie Hoffman. Bob’s family memories are filled with time spent with loved ones, sharing stories, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Bob and Shirley spent many years in Rochester, MN. In retirement they moved to South Dakota, spent several winters in Bandera, TX and currently live in Lake City, SD. Bob is survived by his wife Shirley of 52 years; his sons: Douglas and Curtis Olson, Robert, Scott and Steven Hoffman; and a sister, Bonnie (Dale) Mumm.
He is preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Julie (Hoffman) Thompson; son, Mitch Olson; his brothers, Kermit and Darrell Olson; his parents; and many cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who welcomed him into eternal rest.
A proud Norwegian at heart, Bob cherished lutefisk, and kumla and took pride in his heritage. Fishing, morning coffee with friends, and trips to local establishments were some of his favorite rituals. He enjoyed dice games, cards and pull tabs, often sharing a friendly laugh with neighbors and family.
He valued time spent with nieces and nephews, and he had a close bond with his greatnieces and great-nephews.
Bob’s celebration of life service will be held 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at Lake City Municipal in Lake City, SD.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to caregivers and friends who offered support and companionship throughout Bob’s life and final days.
Bob’s warmth and steadfast love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in memories shared and lives he touched. His life was marked by service, hard work, and deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
