DON MITCHELL

DON MITCHELL

Donald Lee was born June 21, 1946 to Clyde and Anna (Gerdes) Mitchell in Aberdeen, SD. He grew up on farms around the Hecla, SD area. Don attended his elementary years at Pearson country school east of Hecla, later going to Hecla High. When he was 16, he moved to California and worked at Hehr Manufacturing with his dad. Around 1967 he went to work with his brothers Bill and Glenn at Mitchell Cement before going to work for Tudor-Saliba a prominent heavy-civil building construction firm that merged with Perini Corporation in 2008. Don worked there until his retirement.

In July of 1971, he was united in marriage to Priscilla (Pat) Drilich at their home. They later purchased property in Sun Valley, CA where he resided until his death May 8, 2026. To this union two sons were born, Michael and Daniel.

Don enjoyed horseback riding (or Mule), caring for his horses and mules and others that he boarded at his stables. Don and Pat attended many Mule Day events in Bishop, CA and made many lifelong friends there and in his community where he lived. A highlight in Don’s life was being honored to ride his mule and lead his pack mule in the 1990 Rose parade. Don loved his family, trail riding, hunting and fishing and his many trips back to his roots in SD to hunt, fish and enjoy time with his brothers, sister, family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife Pat of 54 years; sons Michael and Danny; two grandsons, Mason and Caleb; brothers Bill (Sandy), Glenn, George (Conda), Tim (Deena); sister Darlene (John) Schroeder and many nephews, nieces and great nephews & nieces. Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother Hei.
