MARV FLIEHS
MARV FLIEHS

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2026 at Nazareth Lutheran Church.
Marvin Fliehs Jr. was born December 8, 1946 in Aberdeen, SD to Marvin Sr. and Mary Ann (Nehls) Fliehs. He and his family spent a few years in Florida before they moved to the Cogswell area. He attended all his schooling in Havana and graduated from Havana High School in 1965. While in high school Marv was involved in all sports and enjoyed being part of his close knit class.
After graduation Marv went to Trinity Bible College in Ellendale for roughly four years before enlisting in the service. He served in the United States Army from September 1970 to June 1973. After being honorably discharged he moved back to the family farm near Cogswell.
Marv said, “I love farming better than anything I have ever done.” That was shown with his many years of dedication farming alongside his dad and brothers. Along with farming came his true passion which was working cattle, he loved his cattle. For a number of years he helped his brother Dennis with his cattle and with haying. He also worked for Terry Baltes, who became a very dear friend to him. In 1996 he began working for Hoistad Farms and would continue to work there for the next 30 years.
On July 28, 1989 he married Julie Kersting, and along with her three children, Marv and Julie were blessed with three more children. They lived in Forman before moving to “Fliehs Farm 2” where they spent many wonderful years as a family. He loved his family and cherished all the moments he spent with his children and grandchildren. Marv always referred to himself as “a different breed of cat” but many would agree that’s what made him special.
Marv loved hunting, from elk to deer to you name it. Along with his good friend Melvin Baumgartner he made deer sausage and Red Eye. He also enjoyed fishing and ice fishing. He was a talented taxidermist. He also did woodworking projects which included many deer plaques with his good friend Alan Olstad. He was a lifelong member of the Cogswell Gun Club.
Marv also liked to go rock hunting to add to his rock collection, along with his marble collection. He grew up playing softball and continued playing throughout his adult years. When he wasn’t playing he enjoyed attending softball games. He shot pool for many years and liked going to auction sales. Most of all Marv enjoyed a good steak and a nice cold bottle of Schmidt beer while spending time with his family and friends.
