The memorial service for Norma Jean Baker will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2026 at First Lutheran Church in Britton. Pastor Jesse Carson will officiate the service. Inurnment will take place in the Britton Cemetery.

A visitation will be 5:007:00 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2026 at Olson Funeral Chapel in Britton.

Norma Jean Yelkin was born March 17, 1939, to Lester (Perk) and Dorothy (Barger) Yelkin in Newark, SD. She was the oldest of 8 children. She lived in Marshall County most of her life. Norma Jean went to Newark Country up until the 8th grade.

On March 31, 1954, Norma Jean married Johnny Baker in Britton, SD. They raised nine children together. They made their home in Kidder and the surrounding area until they moved to Britton in 2011.

Throughout her life, she was a dedicated and hardworking woman who took great pride in caring for others. When she wasn’t taking care of her children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren, she was working. She worked for over 20 years at Buhl’s, where she was known for her reliability and strong work ethic. In addition, she shared her talents as a cook at both the manor and the hospital. Beyond her formal work, she was the town seamstress, generously offering her skills to others —always ready to help whenever someone was in need.

Norma Jean passed away Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton at the age of 87.

Norma is survived her children, Lorrie Horn (Dan Baus), Sherry (Gary) Siers, Jerry Baker, Carrie (Bob) Walker, Johnny (Charlene) Baker Jr, Jennifer (Don) Hanford, Stacy (Ty) Smith, Billie Jo Simons (Derick Huisenga) and Stephanie (Warren) Symens; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 1 more on the way; and 2 great-great grandchild with one more on the way; sister Paulette (Jim) White of Huron; 3 brothers Bernard (Janice) Yelkin of Moisnee, WI, Willie (Marie) Yelkin of Keizer, OR, and Dan (Dianne) Yelkin of Britton, SD; brother-in-law Buddy Severson of Kidder, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband Johnny Baker, Sr; her parents, Lester & Dorothy Yelkin; 3 sisters (Patsy Yelkin, Diann Severson & Monica Ringer); 2 grandsons (Riley Hill & Joshua Baker) and 1 granddaughter (Karalinn Baker).
