LORNE H. HILL

Lorne H. Hill, 94, Veblen, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Edgewood Assisted Living in Sisseton.

Funeral Services will be Friday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen with Rev. Pat Schubert officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the First, Faith & Our Savior’s Lutheran Parishes Facebook page.

Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery, rural Veblen. Military honors will be provided by the Eddie Robertson American Legion Post 76 of Veblen and the Fort Sisseton VFW Post 3342. Pallbearers will be Brandon Gieser, Aaron Theisen, Daniel Ehlert, Jacob Gleason, Devin Miller, Lee Solberg, and Tyler Appel.

Visitation will be Friday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt is in charge of the arrangements.

Lorne Harvey Hill was born on January 3, 1932, to Gilford and Martina (Pederson) Hill in Veblen, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Nidaros Church in rural Veblen. Lorne graduated with honors from Veblen High School in 1949. He then attended Augsburg College, where he earned a degree in Science in 1953.

At the age of 21, Lorne entered the United States Army and proudly served his country for three years. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Japan. Lorne was a member of the Eddie Robertson American Legion Post 76 of Veblen and the Fort Sisseton VFW Post 3342. In May 2022, he was honored to participate in the Midwest Honor Flight, a meaningful experience he deeply appreciated.

Following his military service, Lorne returned home to farm alongside his father. Farming was not just his livelihood, but his passion, and he remained actively involved in the operation until 2024.

Lorne met the love of his life, Mary, and the couple was united in marriage in 1980. Together they built a life on the family farm, where they enjoyed spending time with friends and family and creating many cherished memories. In 2002, Lorne and Mary moved to Sisseton, and in January 2025, they made their home at Edgewood Assisted Living.

Freemasons and Shriners International member Lorne found great enjoyment in farming, had a passion for foreign cars, and was an avid reader throughout his life.

Lorne is survived by his loving wife, Mary; granddaughter, Amanda Lock; sister, Grace Gleason; nephews, Tim (Lindsay) Gleason and John (Shelly) Gleason; nieces, Susan (Myron) Ehlert and Jo (Scott) Theisen; and numerous greatnieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and greatgreat- nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilford and Martina Hill; stepson, Tim Lock; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Riba and Neil Gleason.
