Mahlon was born on March 3rd, 1941, to Cyrus and Lucille (Johnson) Spurr in Aberdeen, SD. He grew up on the family farm one mile north of Houghton. Mahlon attended grade school in Houghton. He played basketball in high school and worked for his uncle Leo Johnson on his farm. Mahlon graduated from Hecla High School with the class of 1959.
On September 5, 1962, Mahlon was united in marriage to Linda Dinger at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla. They made their home on Mahlon’s family farm where they are to this day. Mahlon was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla where he was on the church council. He was also on the Lansing Township Board for many years, the Soil Conservation Board and was a member of the Investment Club. Mahlon sold seed for Northrup King and later sold Pioneer seed. Mahlon and Linda were able to take several trips from selling corn seed. He attended races at the Brown County Speedway with Gene Luttrell and Ted Windburn. Mahlon loved his John Deere Tractors. He took care of his yard and was very particular with the mowing. Mahlon loved his animals. He enjoyed going to rodeos and watching his granddaughter compete in barrels. Mahlon could not wait for the Kree Mee Stand to open in Britton. Going there to get ice cream was one of his favorite things to do. Nothing was more important to Mahlon than his family and he loved spending time with his grandchildren and pets.
