RUSSELL NICKELSON

RUSSELL NICKELSON

The memorial service for Russell Nickelson will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Highlanda Lutheran Church of rural Langford. Pastor Dan Cole and Diane Hoines will officiate the service.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026 at the church, concluding with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.

Russell Wayne Nickelson was born May 30, 1949 to Albin and Adeline (Carlson) Nickelson. He grew up on the family farm. He attended Sisseton Township Country School through 5th Grade before attending school in Langford. Throughout high school he participated in various sports and graduated in 1967 from Langford High School.

Following high school he enrolled at Northern State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts. While in college he began farming with his father. From 1969-1975 he was enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and worked as a finance clerk. On June 15, 1971 Russell was untied in marriage to Mona Olson. Russell began farming with his dad full time in 1972, and they made their home on the family farm. In 1975 he was so proud to become a father to Aron, his only child. He spent as much time as he could with his little boy and was proud of the man he became. Aron married Sarah, who Russell loved, and was blessed with two grandchildren, Ryan and Halle, who he enjoyed playing a few tricks on over the years.

Along with farming he held positions on various boards. He was on the board at Highlanda Church, Sisseton Township Board for 25 years and Association of Townships of Marshall County Treasurer.

His favorite past time was sitting on the porch with Mona and listening to the birds, watching the geese and ducks fly overhead, and hearing the mourning doves call to each other. He liked listening to the creek run, watching the kittens play (especially in Mona’s flower garden) and it was always fun to see a deer or rabbit come into the yard. He loved all God’s creations.

Russell was also a car enthusiast and attended many car shows, and even collected a few of his own. He and Mona organized Langford’s car show for many years. He enjoyed watching his children drag racing.

Around 2021 Russell developed Parkinson’s disease and had to retire from farming. He did his best to best the disease, but as of yet, there is no cure. Russell passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 76.

He is survived by his wife, Mona; his son, Aron (Sarah) Nickelson; his grandchildren, Ryan and Halle Nickelson; his brother, Richard (Susan) Nickelson; his sister, Marie McIntosh; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, grandparents and one child.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Mona Nickelson – 42876 122nd St. – Langford, SD 57454.

Poll: TAX-PAYER FUNDS TO ATTRACT COMPANIES?During last week’s SD Republican gubernatorial debate, candidates discussed whether taxpayer dollars should be used to attract large out-of-state companies, particularly in relation to data centers and other economic development projects. While some emphasized the need to remain competitive with other states, others pushed back on offering incentives to major corporations. Should taxpayer funds be used to attract large out-of-state companies, such as tech firms?
