MAE (HEITMANN) SHULSON

The graveside service for Mae (Heitmann) Shulson, formerly of St. Thomas, ND, is pending for spring at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Mae L. Heitmann was born May 1, 1926 in Marshall County, SD to Louis and Martha (Manthie) Heitmann. She attended her schooling in Lake City and graduated from Lake City High School. Following graduation she attended Northern State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. She taught two years in Hecla and a few years at country schools in Marshall County.

On June 4, 1949 she was united in marriage to Sanford Shulson at the Lake City Baptist Church. They would spend a few years in Elgin, ND before moving to St. Thomas, ND where they made their home for the remainder of their life together. They celebrated over 70 years of marriage before Sanford’s passing on March 8, 2023. After his death Mae moved to Wheatcrest Hills in Britton.

During her time in St. Thomas she worked at the St. Thomas School as the business manager, while Sanford worked for Bremer Bank. Mae was the treasurer and secretary on various boards over the years. They were members of St. Thomas Methodist Church. She was a big supporter of the Republican Party and attended the yearly convention. As a couple Mae and Sanford loved to travel and traveled to every state except Hawaii. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Over the years she made many wonderful pieces for her nieces and nephews, and even their children.

Mae passed away Sunday, March 8, 2026 (three years to the day of Sanford’s passing) at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton, at the age of 99.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Jan Just, Kay Rear, Marlene Kann, Tom Lee, Robert Lee, Ronnie Lee, Larry Heitmann, Randy Heitmann and Nick Heitmann.

Shewasprecededindeathby her parents, Louis and Martha Heitmann; siblings, Lois Lee and Leonard Heitmann; niece, Pam Robertson and nephew, Greg Hanson.
