Visitation will be 5:30-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen, concluding with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.

Verona Opal (Grimsrud) Hofland was born May 31, 1934, to Emma (Jacobson) and Arthur Grimsrud on the family farm near Hillhead, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Trondhjem Lutheran Church. Her elementary years were spent at Nordland School District #1, and she graduated from Veblen High School in 1952. She attended Northern State Teachers College for a year and then taught at a country school. Later, she was a substitute teacher at the Veblen School.

On August 23, 1953, she married Duane Nels Hofland at Trondhjem Lutheran Church of rural Veblen. They became the parents of three children: Rick, Randy, and Dawn. They made their home in Veblen until 1968 when they moved to the family farm southwest of Veblen. On October 11, 1976, Verona began working at Dakotah Incorporated in Veblen. She sewed comforters and decorative pillows that were sold throughout the United States. With leftover fabric, she created comforters and baby blankets for her family members, and some of those comforters are still in use today. She retired in 1996. Duane died October 25, 2011. Verona continued living on the farm until February 9, 2025, when she broke her hip. After surgery, she began rehabilitation at Prairie Heights Healthcare in Aberdeen and continued to reside there until her death.

Verona was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Veblen and an active member of the Women of the ELCA group and Trust Circle. She taught Sunday school and confirmation classes. She particularly enjoyed working with the confirmands and had many stories of what wonderful teenagers they were! Verona relished being part of Veblen Senior Citizens and Venture Investment Club as she was definitely fond of socializing. Verona also served on the Veblen Library Association Board and volunteered as a librarian.

Verona truly enjoyed the simple things in life: relaxing at the cabin or golfing at Roy Lake, flowers, watching the orioles, hummingbirds, and little yellow finches as she sat in her recliner, attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals, a glass of wine while watching Wheel of Fortune with Rick and Cindy, playing bridge with her friends and checkers and Pokeno with her grandchildren, a good book, word searches, sharing coffee and either her delicious kringla or chocolate chip cookies with family and friends, game shows, labradors, Hallmark movies, and cheering on the Twins, Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles. Perhaps above everything else, Verona loved being “Grandma Nona” to her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Verona passed away Friday, February 6, 2026 at Prairie Heights Healthcare in Aberdeen, at the age of 91.

Those grateful for having shared her life are her son, Rick (Cindy) Hofland of Veblen, daughter, Dawn (Layton) Pederson of Aberdeen, and daughter-in-law, Cathy Hofland of Aberdeen; her grandchildren: Dustin (Kristin) Hofland, Nick Hofland, Jessica (Scott) Norman, Erin (Joei) Fiegler, Dani (Jake) Kleindl, Lee (Maddy) Pederson, and Emily (Andrew) Puetz; her great-grandchildren: Brandi (Andrew) Olson, Riley Hofland, Carsen Hofland, Kinley Hofland, Rowen Hofland, Easton Norman, Hayden Norman, Charlotte Norman, Bo Fiegler, Samuel Fiegler, Logan Kleindl, Mollie Kleindl, Cynthia Pederson, Leighton Pederson, and Ellis Puetz; her brother-in-law, Neal Hofland; her sisters-inlaw, Ella Grimsrud, Sharon Hofland, and JoAnn (Roger) Hill; and many nieces and nephews.

Welcoming her to her heavenly home were her husband, Duane Hofland; son, Randy Hofland; parents, Art and Emma Grimsrud; in-laws, Elmer and Jean Hofland; brothers, Richard and Gordon Grimsrud; infant twin sisters, Bonita and Nyla Grimsrud; brother-in-law, Dean Hofland; sisters-in-law, Karen Grimsrud and Jeanne Hofland; and nephew Erik Grimsrud.

The family would like to thank the staff of Prairie Heights Healthcare and Verona’s hospice team for their loving care and compassion. A very special thank you goes to Verona’s roommate Irene for being such a wonderful person to Verona and her family.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Rick Hofland – 44473 107th St. – Veblen, SD 57270.
