MAUREEN ALICE MAKENS

MAUREEN ALICE MAKENS

In Loving Memory of Maureen Alice Makens Maureen, a beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 9th, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, kindness, and quiet strength. Born on March 25, 1943, in Britton, South Dakota, to Raymond and Josephine Makens, she was raised on the family farm where she developed a lifelong love for nature, learning, and family.

After graduating from Britton High School, she pursued her passion for science at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, earning a degree in microbiology. She later settled in West St. Paul, where she dedicated many years to her work in the laboratory at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Her meticulous nature and commitment to excellence made her a valued member of the medical community until her retirement. Outside of work, Maureen was an avid traveler and photographer. Her journeys took her across the globe, but Ireland held a special place in her heart, which she explored on several occasions. She cherished the time spent at the family farm, especially with her brother Patrick and the next generations of Makens and Wengryn’s. Her gentle spirit and thoughtful presence made her a treasured part of every gathering. Faith was a guiding force throughout Maureen’s life. She was a devoted and longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West St. Paul, where she found spiritual nourishment and a strong sense of community. Her quiet devotion and steadfast belief were reflected in the way she lived with grace, humility, and compassion.

She is survived by her loving niece and nephews: Michael (Becky) Makens, Amie (Phil) Wengryn, and DJ Makens; and her great-nieces and nephews: Jude Makens, Maudy Makens, Connor Wengryn, Karson Wengryn, Chase Wengryn, Kathryn Wengryn, and Kylie Venterosa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Josephine Makens, and her brother, Patrick Makens. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, in the photographs she captured, and in the stories shared around the family table.
