Voters Go To Polls Tuesday

District 1 voters, which includes residents of Marshall, Day, and Roberts Counties and a portion of Brown County, will decide races for the South Dakota Governor, House and Senate when they head to the polls for the general election on Tuesday. There are also a number of other state offices on the ballot as well as two other major ballot issues.

Polls will be open in the county from 7 a.m.-7 p.m on Tuesday.

Early voting remains popular in the county. Marshall County Auditor Megan Biel said that as of Tuesday morning, 275 people have early voted. Voters can still cast ballots throughout this week at the Auditor’s office during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mailed absentee ballots need to be received in Tuesday’s mail.

Republican Kristi Noem is running for another term as South Dakota Governor, along with Lt. Governor Larry Rhoden. Challengers are Democrat Jamie Smith (Lt. Gov. Jennifer Keintz) and Libertarian Tracey Quint (Lt. Gov. Ashley Strand).

Incumbent U.S. Senator John Thune is running against challengers Democrat Brian Bengs and Libertarian Tamara Lesnar for a Senate seat.

Incumbent Republican U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson is running against Libertarian Collin Duprel for a two year term.

Republican Incumbent Michael Rohl of rural Brown is running for another term as State District 1 Senator against Independent Susan Wismer of Britton. Four candidates are running for two positions in the South Dakota House –, Republican incumbent Tamara St. John of Sisseton, Democrat Steven McCleerey of Sisseton, Democrat Kay Nikolas of Sisseton and Republican Joe Donnell of Sisseton.

Republican Incumbent Richard Sattgast is seeking reelection for State Auditor against Democrat Stephanie Marty and Libertarian Rene Meyer. Josh Haeder, the Republican Incumbent State Treasurer, is running against Democratic challenger John Cunningham.

Democrat Timothy Azure and Republican Brock Greenfield are running for Commissioner of School and Public Lands.

There are two candidates for a spot on the Public Utilities Commission. They include Republican incumbent Chris Nelson and Democrat challenger Jeffrey Barth.

Voters will also be asked to retain or not retain Supreme Court Justices Patricia DeVaney and Mark Salter. And to vote for Fifth Circuit Court judges, including Marshall Lovrien, Tony Portra, Gregory Magera, and Richard Sommers.

One constitutional amendment and one initiated measure will be on the ballot. Constitutional Amendment D would expand Medicaid eligibility in South Dakota. Initiated Measure 27 would legalize the possession, use, and distribution of marijuana.
