County Approves Budget, Culvert Work Discussed

The Marshall County Commissioners held a meeting on Tuesday. September 20. Mike Atkinson spoke during the public comment portion to seek feedback on a drainage project. The commission recommended that he speak to Dustin Hofland in the Highway Department about the project.

During the regular portion of the meeting, the county budget was approved. David Geyer attended the meeting representing David Jones. Jones was requesting that the county change out a culvert in Lowell Township on 114th Street. He offered to pay for a hydraulic study if the commission agreed to follow the hydraulic study’s recommendations. They rejected that offer and noted that area has not flooded in a number of years.

Hofland presented an agreement to pay two landowners 40 cents per yard for easements for the Eden project. The county sheriff will work with Hofland to establish a speed zone on the west side of Eden where the speed limit goes from 55 mph to 20 mph.

A motion was approved to raise the starting pay for county employees from $15 to $16. A motion was approved to not have a ballot drop box outside the courthouse for the upcoming election. People will have to deliver or mail absentee ballots to the auditor. Absentee voting starts this Friday in South Dakota.

Variances were approved for Dick Siefkes; 33’ variance to the normal high-water mark; Red Iron Lake Township. Building Permits were approved for Estee Williams (American Tower); Sisseton, Person Family Trust; Lowell, Dick Siefkes; Red Iron Lake.

The Commission will next meet on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Besides regular zoning and highway matters, they will also discuss the Courthouse project.
