Bender Appointed MC Commissioner

    The Marshall County Commissioners have a full table again. At their meeting Tuesday morning, the board reviewed applications for the District 3 Commissioner seat that was formerly held by Kevin Jones who recently passed away. After a lengthy closed session, Jason Bender of Britton and Waverly Township was appointed to fill the seat for the rest of 2024. 
    Petitions are also being accepted to run in an election for that commissioner seat for the next two years, starting in January 2025. Those two years would complete Jones’s term. 
    In other business, Highway Superintendent Dustin Hofland discussed possible highway projects. County road 11 near Amherst needs work. Hofland noted that he is going to seek the opinion of Amherst residents regarding if the county should pursue that project at the same time work will be progressing on Highway 10 or if they should wait on that project. 
    Three Marshall County deputies who graduated from the state law enforcement academy last week, Drew Freeman, Ridge Oliver and Slade Owen, were granted $1.33/hour raises affective next week. 
    States Attorney, Victor Rapkoch was present at the meeting and gave a legislative update focusing on matters important to counties. 
    In zoning matters, a variance for Korey Freudenthal, Lake Township, was approved. Drainage permits were approved for Renald Tank- Waverly Township, affective April 2 and Newport Colony in Weston Township (approved conditionally) affective April 2.  Building permits were granted to Robert & Peggy Foltz - Lake Township and Brandon Peters - Pleasant Valley Township.
    Rapkoch and along with Erin Collins-Miles, Zoning Director, discussed their meeting with FEMA regarding floodplain mapping in Marshall County and questions concerning the process. They will be setting up a meeting for FEMA to speak with the Board in the coming weeks.
