Unbeaten Elk Point Jefferson jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised past Groton Area on the Tigers homecoming on Friday 42-8.
GA, now 2-3, has a bye this week before traveling to Clear Lake to take on Deuel on Friday, Oct. 2.
“Elk Point-Jefferson is as good on the field as they are on film and on paper,” said GA coach Jordan Carson. “We started out the game with a few unfortunate turnovers, which they capitalized on. When playing teams of that caliber you have to keep the ball in your possession as long as possible. They make adjustments as well as any team around.
“We were able to move the ball through the air on them to a certain extent and our edge receivers were able to make some moves in space and get us yardage. Our guys played hard from start to finish and we were able to get a score on the board right towards the end. But they are a well-coached, well-oiled machine with good size and depth across the entirety of the roster.”
The GA coach said his squad will use the bye week to get back to the fundamentals.
“For our bye week we are going to get back to fundamentals of football and work on getting better,” stressed Carson, “by becoming better blockers, tacklers, and continuing to build chemistry amongst the team so we work well in unison for a big game coming up after the bye week.”
Elk Point-Jefferson used a potent running attack to dominate the trenches against the Tigers. The visitors piled up 376 yards rushing and scored all six of their touchdowns on the ground, holding a 425-232 total yards advantage. GA was limited to just 31 yards rushing but managed 201 via the airways with Anthony Tracy pulling down eight balls for 130 yards from quarterback Asher Johnson.
Groton Area’s only score came with 2:12 to play in the contest when Johnson found the end zone from three yards out. Johnson then passed to Ryder Schelle for the two-point conversion.
Johnson led the defensive effort with eight tackles and Gunner Hardy and Anthony Tracy had seven stops apiece. Hunter Aden had a fumble recovery.
