B-H WINS CROSS-COUNTY TUSSLE

Improve Season Mark To 5-1
B-H WINS CROSS-COUNTY TUSSLE
Britton-Hecla’s Daynika Zuehlke, left, and Chellon Pruitt attempt to block this attack from Langford Area’s Emily Olson is Monday night’s cross-county rivalry game. The Lady Braves earned a sweep to improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Britton-Hecla volleyball squad added a pair of wins in the past week to boost its season mark to 5-1.
The Lady Braves defeated cross-county rival Langford Area on Monday in straight sets 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 and stopped Deuel on the road on Thursday.  Match statistics were not provided for the Deuel match.
This week B-H hosts Redfield for homecoming on Thursday and Waverly-South Shore comes to town on Tuesday.
Langford Area looked like it was going to take charge in the early-going on Monday.  Coach Susan Larson’s club jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind six straight serves from Brooke Dwight and still led 8-2 before the Lady Braves came clawing back.
Chellon Pruitt served an ace and Maddi Micko recorded a kill and service ace to kick off an 8-2 run that knotted the set at 10-all.  There were eight more ties in the set with the last one at 22-22 before Daynika Zuehlke hit a crucial kill and Pruitt came up with another ace for the win.
Set two was also a nail-biter with seven ties.  Jaelee Grupe, who led B-H with 11 kills, broke the final 13-13 deadlock with a pair of blocks and Pruitt served her third ace for a 17-13 margin.  Zuehlke hit back-to-back kills to help stretch the lead to 23-17 but LA made the finish interesting.  The Lady Lions went on a 6-1 run to cut the margin to 24-23 before Micko put down a hard spike for the 2-0 lead.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair in the early going.  Six ties and three lead changes resulted in a 15-14 B-H lead, but then the Lady Braves went on a 6-0 run behind three Micko kills and another from Mataya Knecht and five straight service points from Grupe to lead a 21-14.  LA scored the next two points but Micko and Grupe answered with kills and Zuehlke went back to work with two more kills to end the match.
Britton-Hecla pounded 34 kills to 20 for LA, led by  Micko’s nine, Grupe’s eight, and Zuehlke’s seven.  Grupe and Pruitt added three aces and Kennady Van Lith came up with 15 digs.
Lizzie Gustafson led LA with seven kills and 17 digs and Emily Olson had six kills.  Brooke Dwight was 13-14 at the service line with a pair of aces.
