Britton-Hecla hosted 12 teams for its annual invitational at the Britton Country Club last week Tuesday.
The local runners were scheduled to compete in Webster on Monday but that meet was cancelled due to rain. Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad will be back in action at Aberdeen Roncalli on Thursday and at Deuel on Monday.
One more home meet has been added to the team’s schedule. B-H will host the Eastern Coteau Conference meet on Monday, Oct. 5.
“I thought that our meet went well,” said Symens. “We had really nice weather to run. We also have a challenging course, and to be able to run a good time shows that you’ve been working hard. We’re excited to see what happens for the rest of the year.”
Last week Joseph O’Brien was the top finisher for B-H in the boys varsity event, taking fourth on the 5,000-meter course in 20:19.91 in a field of 30 runners.. Aiden Strong was 27th with a 27:15.95 clocking. Livia Knecht was the only B-H girls varsity competitor, finishing fifth in a 10-runner field with a time of 23:57.60 for 5,000 meters.
Two B-H girls ran in the 3,000-meter junior varsity race in a 13-runner field. Lillian Boyko placed fourth in 15:25.02 and Grace Folkman was eighth in 17:08.82. Britton-Hecla did not have any boys JV runners.
In the middle school division six Britton-Hecla boys competed in the 18-runner field. Jase Stelzer was third in 12:29.90, Hezekiah O’Brien fourth in 12:44.15, Reeve Knecht eighth in 14:10.86, Tripp Hagen ninth in 14:24.91, Leo Schuller 13th in 17:13.51, and Mark Folkman 14th in 18:12.36.
Team placers in the boys varsity race were Ellendale 26, Sargent Central-Lidgerwood-Oakes 33, Edgeley-Kulm 43, and Webster Area 44, while no team fielded enough runners in the girls varsity event to post team scores.
Tri-State was the only full team in the girls JV race, and Webster Area took the boys JV title with 22 points, followed by Redfield at 23 and Enderlin 41.
