The Claremont Junior Legion baseball team put up a good fight but fell short in a pair of Region 1B matchups in Sisseton last week.
The Honkers trailed eventual champion Sisseton 5-4 after five innings in the first contest before dropping a 7-4 decision and was down just 4-0 to Groton after five in a loser’s bracket game of the double elimination event before falling 7-0 to end its season.

Sisseton led 5-2 before Claremont closed the gap with a two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Sisseton answered with two runs of its own in the sixth but the Honkers made things interesting in the final frame, loading the bases with nobody out, but were unable to plate any runs.
Sisseton’s Rylan Anderson came on in relief in the seventh and put out the Honkers’ fire. He fielded a grounder and threw out the runner at home plate before recording a pair of strikeouts to end the threat and the game.
Case Reints led Claremont at the plate with two doubles and two RBI’s. Nate Schuller doubled, and Ryker Bruns and Kamryn McKane both singled. Nick Cutler went the distance on the mound.

Despite managing just a single hit in the game, the Honkers hung in the contest until Groton pushed across three tallies in the seventh inning with the aid of some Claremont errors.
“Other than the errors in the seventh inning it was a very competitive game,” said Coach Joe Gustafson. Nate Schuller pitched very well, only giving up two earned runs in going the distance. Groton’s Kason Oswald pitched a one-hitter against us and hats off to him.”
Korbin McKane singled for the Honkers’ only hit of the game.
