The Britton Lumberjacks varsity baseball team won four of six contests in the past week, four of the games being one-run affairs, while the junior varsity took two of three.
The varsity nine swept a twin bill from Groton last week Tuesday 15-6, 7-4, and fell to Sisseton 3-2 last week Wednesday. In round-robin games during the Bring the Heat Classic held in Britton on Sunday the Jacks edged Clark 10-9, dropped a 2-1 decision to Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern (WIN), and nipped Mobridge 3-2 in extra innings.
Britton’s JV squad blanked Clark 8-0 and Sisseton 10-0, both games no-hitters, in the Bring the Heat Classic on Saturday before dropping the nightcap to Selby 5-4 in extra innings.
Britton Varsity 15-7
Groton 6-4
Groton jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the opener before the Jacks cut the margin to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth and took charge with an eight-run third frame. Britton battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the second game with a five-run outburst in the third inning.
Will Richter led a 13-hit attack in game one with a triple, two singles, and three RBI’s. Colton Chapin added a double and single, Mitchell Burger and Dylan Redler each singles twice and knocked in a pair of runs, and Kaden Mills, Lincoln Kilker, Max Suther, and Lofton Heer each singles with Heer and Nathan Folkman each collecting two RBI’s. Drew Heitmann picked up the pitching win in relief of Redler.
In the nightcap Richter again led the way with a pair of singles and Chapin and Ben Suther both doubled. Chapin pitched the first four innings and earned the win, fanning seven batters.
Sisseton Varsity 3
Britton 2
Sisseton led 3-1 after five innings and weathered a Britton rally in the sixth for the one-run win.
Ben Suther doubled and knocked in two runs for the Jacks and Burger, Richter, and Kilker each singles. Mills was tagged with the pitching loss.
Britton Varsity 10
Clark 9
Britton erased an early 5-0 deficit with two runs in the second and six more in the third to lead 8-5 but Clark battled back to lead 9-8, forcing the Jacks to score twice in the bottom of the sixth for a walk-off win.
Burger and Ben Suther each doubled and singled and Jack Teveldal laced a pair of singles and knocked in two runs to lead the Jacks at the plate. Mills added a single and two RBI’s and Max Suther and Kilker rapped safeties. Mills picked up the pitching win in two innings of relief.
WIN Varsity 2
Britton 1
Both teams managed a first inning run and WIN added the game-winner in the fifth.
Richter doubled for Britton’s only hit. Ben Suther absorbed the pitching loss, striking out six and allowing just four hits in four and two-thirds innings.
Britton Varsity 3
Mobridge 2
Mobridge knotted the game at 2-2 with a run in the fifth and the Jacks pushed across a run in the eighth for the victory despite being out-hit 7-4.
Ben Suther singled twice and Chapin and Redler added base hits. Burger pitched five innings, striking out eight, and Mills earned the win with three innings of relief, fanning four.
Britton JV 8
Clark 0
Levi Mills hurled a no-hitter, walking just one batter and striking out five in six innings.
Drew Heitmann, Luke Bosse, Liam Peters, and Henry Kilker each laced singles and the Jacks did not commit an error.
Britton JV 10
Sisseton 0
Britton pitched back-to-back no-hitters with Drew Heitmann giving up only a pair of walks and striking out three.
Heitmann also helped himself out at the plate with three base hits and a trio of RBI’s. Mills, Kylan Sasker, and Kilker added safeties, and the Jacks again played errorless ball in the field.
Selby JV 5
Britton 4
Britton rallied from being down 4-1 with three runs in the sixth but Selby managed a run in the eighth for the win.
The Jacks out-hit Selby 11-8, led by Suther’s double and single, Blayden Downs’ two singles and two RBI’s, and two safeties from Peters. Heitmann added a triple, and Kilker, Mills, Bosse, and Corbin Dawson singled.
