Former Britton-Hecla coach Terry Nelson, along with his two brothers, will be among the 2026 inductees into the Flandreau Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday at the Royal River Casino.
Terry Nelson was a 10-time letterwinner in football, basketball, and track at Flandreau. He earned All-Big 8 Conference honors his senior year in football and three years in basketball, leading his team to a third place finish at the 1975 state tourney and setting a school scoring record with 1,198 points. In track he set school records in the discus, high jump, and 440 relay and helped his team to state track titles in 1972-1974 and runner-up in 1975. He went on to compete in football, basketball, and track at Huron College.
Tim Nelson, a 1977 graduate, followed in his big brother’s footsteps and lettered 10 times for the Fliers in football, basketball, and track. He earned All-Conference honors in football as a senior and basketball as a junior and senior. In track he finished third all-time in the discus and fourth all-time in the shot. Nelson attended Dakota Wesleyan where he lettered in football for four years and an All-Conference pick at defensive tackle his junior and senior seasons, still holding the school record for most fumbles recovered with 13.
Tom Nelson is a 1979 Flandreau graduate and lettered in football, basketball, and track all four years. He earned All-Conference honors in football as a senior and was a first team All-Stater as a punter/kicker. On the hardcourt he started all 93 varsity contests, earning All-Conference recognition in 1977 and 1979 and leading the league in scoring in 1978 and 1979. At the time of his graduation, he held school records for season and career assists and topped the scoring chart with 1,356 points. He also set a school record in the discus and shot put.
