Britton-Hecla came home with three state medals from the state track meet held in Sioux Falls Thursday through Saturday.
Senior Abby Lee ended her stellar high school career with a second place in triple jump, just four inches behind the state champion, and an eighth place in long jump.  She had the fourth-best jump in Class A heading into the meet and  unleashed a 36-11.50 effort that broke a 33-year-old school record held by Allison Peters.  Lee also moved up from 15th to eighth in the long jump with a leap of 16-4.25.
Sophomore Jaelee Grupe was the other B-H state placer, taking seventh in the high jump with a personal best of 5-2.  Grupe had ranked in the 14th spot in Class A prior to state competition.
Boys state competitors included Jaxon Zuehlke, moving from the 19th spot in javelin to 10th and just seven inches short of the eighth position.  Zuehlke also teamed up with Drew Heitmann, Ben Suther, and Jack Teveldal to take 16th in the 1600 relay and 21st in the medley.  The 3200 relay was 12th with Heitmann, Suther, Teveldal, and Joseph O’Brien members of that quartet that took nearly six seconds of their season-best time.  Teveldal was 12th in the 800 run, Suther 19th in the 200 dash, and Chaz Vietor competed in high jump but was not among the five clearing the opening height.
On the girls side Marley Sundin was 21st in the 100 dash, Ailyn Lee 23rd in triple jump, and Daynika Zuehlke 24th in javelin.
“I could not be more proud of how the team performed at the state meet this year,” said B-H coach Stephanie Symens.  “Every single athlete stepped onto the track with determination, leaving everything they had out there.  It was a great way to end the season.”
