On the eve of one of our hallmark American holidays, Memorial Day, I’m turning my column over to a local young man. Gunner Hardy, a Langford Area sophomore this past school year, earned first place in the Langford Legion Auxiliary Americanism essay contest this spring and went on to place second at the district level. As we pause to remember our fallen heroes and honor our country on Monday, Gunner’s essay offers meaningful reflection.
Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday and the Veterans Who Fought for Our Freedom
The year 2026 brings with it an extremely important milestone for the United States of America. July 4, 2026, is the 250th birthday of the United States. This day marks 250 years since July 4, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As we reflect on the past 250 years of the United States, we see that America was founded on the basis of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is important that we progress forward with these goals in mind and that we continue to show our patriotism to our country and to those who defend it. At a time when Americans feel more divided than ever before, we must come together to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and the service men and women who have fought for our freedom.
As we celebrate the birth of our great nation, it is important that we take the time to not only celebrate those who fought for our country’s independence but also the brave souls who continue to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to remember the men and women who have fought so bravely for our country. From the Revolutionary War, which granted the United States independence, to the World Wars that unified Americans, the service members of the United States of America have done their part to ensure our freedom. Although Americans remain divided on multiple topics and issues, it is of utmost importance that we become united with a greater goal in mind: the goal of celebrating America’s 250th birthday and honoring the veterans that sacrificed so much for our great nation.
As we look back at America’s past, it is also important to reflect on our cultural history.
Although America is still relatively young, that does not mean that we do not have a rich history. The United States has been a major world power for over 125 years, and the U.S. reached undisputed superpower status following the end of World War Il in 1945. However America’s history and reputation goes far beyond its military might. America boasts the largest economy in the world, unparalleled technological leadership, and worldwide influence and alliances. America also has unmatched liberty and social justice. The United States was able to abolish slavery and grant women’s suffrage which has improved American citizens’ freedom and quality of life. From the day that America was founded, marking the establishment of the first modern federal republic, it has been paving the way for other countries.
This year marks something much larger than each of us. The 250th anniversary of America is a moment of unity and reflection that can unite all of America’s 350 million citizens and bring them together to celebrate the past 250 years and to look ahead at a future of prosperity, harmony, and unity.
