Area communities will hold special remembrances for deceased veterans on Monday in recognition of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those who have fought for our everyday freedoms and are no longer with us. Special remembrance is brought for those who have died in the line of duty.
Britton American Legion Post 80 will honor fallen soldiers and veterans in Lake City at the Catholic Cemetery at 8:30 a.m. A prayer, a poem and a song will be shared.
Post 80 will then move on to their regular service at the Britton cemetery at 10 a.m. A small program will be held including a poem, followed by prayer, and the appropriate 21-gun salute and taps.
A program is planned at the Langford Legion Hall at 10 a.m. Navy veteran Courtney Enfield will be the speaker. Rolls and coffee will be served before and after the program. Veterans will be honored at the Hillside Cemetery immediately following the program.
The Legion Post #76 Color Guard from Veblen will present a prayer, a 21-gun salute, and Taps at four cemeteries beginning at the Palestine Church at 10 a.m. The Color Guard will be at the Veblen Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., the Catholic Cemetery south of Veblen at 11 a.m., and the Zion Lutheran Church at 11:30 a.m. with a lunch to follow.
In the Veblen/Kidder area, a 10:00 graveside service is planned at Trondhjem Cemetery.
Pleasant Valley Church will hold its Memorial Day program with cemetery rites beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a speaker at 11:30 a.m. Will Cutler will deliver the address, and a community dinner will be served at noon.
Services will be held at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Eden, on Memorial Day at 10 a.m. The military graveside service will be presented by the Henning-Shemanski post #267 of the Grenvill American Legion.
Zion Lutheran Church rural Hillhead will hold its annual fundraiser dinner on Monday with military rites at 11:30, dinner and program to follow. Guest speaker will be First Sgt. Kevin Stiegelmeier with music from the Pallansch Family.
A Memorial Day Program at the Hecla Community Center will start at 10 a.m. A cemetery tribute service will follow the program at the Hecla Cemetery, and a freewill lunch back at the the Community Center.
