SBW BEAT GOES ON

SBW BEAT GOES ON
SBW’s Kaden Mills has played a key role in the Mallards 11-0 start to the season as a relief pitcher on a dominant pitching staff.

The beat goes on for the Sisseton-Britton-Webster high school baseball team.
Coach Mark Nelson’s charges remained perfect with four more wins in the past week, sweeping a twin bill from Clark 11-1, 6-0, blanking Hot Springs 12-0, and edging Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern (WIN) 3-1 to boost its season mark to 11-0.
This week the Mallards battle Deuel in a twin bill at Clear Lake today (Wednesday) beginning at 5:30 p.m.  Sunday SBW hosts Redfield for a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Sisseton and wraps up its regular season schedule at Milbank next week Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.

SBW 12
Hot Springs 0
SBW came up with a seven-run explosion in the first inning on five singles  and never looked back in a 12-0 five-inning win over Hot Springs, out-hitting the visitors 15-2.
“There was plenty of offense against Hot Springs,” said SBW boss Mark Nelson.  “It was a good team win. We had several guys gone this weekend for track, but there were a lot of guys that stepped up from the junior varsity and did a nice job for us.”
Mitchell Burger went the distance on the mound in hurling the shutout, allowing just two hits and a pair of walks while fanning five batters.
Six SBW batters came up with two hits each led by Colton Chapin with a home run, single, and three RBI’s and Levi Nelson with a double, single, and two runs batted in.  Rylan Anderson, Dylan Redler, Bryson Hanson, and Will Richter added a pair of safeties each, Max Dahlen doubled, and Carter Stickland, and Burger had base hits.

SBW 3
WIN 1
SBW managed just one hit against WIN but came out on top on the scoreboard to remain unbeaten.
“We had a dominant pitching performance from Rylan Anderson and Kaden Mills came in and got the save,” said Nelson.  “We did just enough offensively to plate three runs. We were not particularly sharp on offense, but we put the ball in play enough to move some runners and win the game. I was happy with the resilience of our group for all seven innings.”
An error helped the Mallards score two runs in the fourth inning.  Mitchell Burger had the only SBW hit and Max Dahlen drove in a run.
Anderson locked up in a pitching duel with WIN’s Quinn Huetl.  Each hurler struck out nine with Huetl going the distance and Anderson throwing a strong six innings, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks

SBW 11-6
Clark 1-0
SBW pitchers continued to be a dominant force in a doubleheader sweep of Clark.
LJ Crooks and Rylan Anderson teamed up in game one, allowing just four hits, one walk, and striking out four while the defense backed them up with errorless ball in the field.  In the nightcap Chaz Vietor went the distance and pitched a shutout, giving up just four hits, not walking a batter, and striking out two in seven innings of work.
“I have coached a lot of baseball and our two games against Clark were some of the most memorable I have had the privilege to be part of,” said Nelson.  “I felt like this team earned some well-deserved respect.  It’s unreal the talent we have on this team and how deep we are.
“We have a lot of guys right now playing at a very high level,” added Nelson.  “Our pitching has been terrific, and our bats have responded with timely hitting. Carter Stickland really carried the team in the first game against Clark. The second game Chaz Vietor pitched a gem.  It’s hard to point to one specific player when we had such a great collective team effort.”
Stickland went 4-4 at the plate with a double and three singles in the opener, scoring three times and knocking in a pair of runs.  Dylan Redler laced a pair of singles and had two RBI’s, and Levi Nelson and Mitchell Burger each singled with Burger knocking in two counters.  SBW exploded for five runs in the first inning to take charge and scored at least once in each frame of the game called in the fifth on the 10-run rule.
In game two the Mallards led just 1-0 after five innings in a pitcher’s duel but rallied for three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.  Nelson rapped two safeties and stole four bases in his lead-off spot, Colton Chapin doubled, and Crooks and Will Richter added singles.

Poll: TEACHER PAY OKAY?South Dakota ranks 46th in the nation in average teacher pay, according to a new report from the National Education Association, with the state’s average salary at $58,486 for the 2024–25 school year. While that reflects a 3.8% increase from the previous year, education advocates note recent funding increases may not fully keep pace with inflation or long-term salary needs. Do you feel teacher pay in South Dakota is adequate, or should it be raised?
