With just two seniors and four upperclassmen the Britton-Hecla girls basketball team went through some growing pains this season on the way to a 4-17 mark and a first-round loss in Region 1A, but with four starters back, along with a strong group of young players, the Lady Braves gained crucial experience for the future.
Karlie Zuehlke and Natalie Treeby were the only two seniors on this year’s roster and a pair of juniors and four sophomores saw extensive duty.
Sophomore Chellon Pruitt was a first team All-Eastern Coteau Conference selection and junior Daynika Zuehlke was named to the ECC second team.
Pruitt led a balanced Lady Braves’ scoring attack with 188 points (9 ave.). Daynika Zuehlke netted 132 (6.3 ave.), junior Maddi Micko 123 (5.9 ave.), sophomore Koryn Jones 95 (4.5 ave.), and Karlie Zuehlke 72 (3.4 ave.).
Pruitt was a monster on the boards, setting a couple of school records in the process, and pulled down 224 rebounds (10.7 ave.). Karlie Zuehlke grabbed 165 (7.9 ave.), Daynika Zuehlke 82 (3.9 ave.), and Micko 72 (3.4 ave.).
Daynika Zuehlke was the team’s primary ballhander and assist leader with 61 (2.9 ave.) and Micko had 47 (2.2 ave.). Jones dished out 31, Pruitt 30, and Karlie Zuehlke 27.
Daynika Zuehlke also led the team in steals with 63 (3 ave.), and Pruitt had 44 thefts (2.1 ave.). Micko came up with 35 steals, Jones 34, Karlie Zuehlke 28, and sophomore Paityn Erickson 26. Karlie Zuehlke set a record for drawing offensive charges and had seven for the season.
