This past weekend my husband and I went to Aberdeen for a date day. Nothing too crazy, just dinner, a movie, and a little shopping. Earlier that morning I attended a baby shower with the twins while Chase was at work. After that we ran home for a quick nap before the babysitter came over. Of course the girls didn’t want to nap, which is fine, but I sure wanted one.
We made sure the house was clean enough for the babysitter, and by three o’clock we were off!
We got to Aberdeen early for supper, and I decided I wanted a good salad bar from Ruby Tuesday. They were out of their croutons, which made me a little sad, but the food was still really good.
Next up was the movie! Chase and I haven’t been to the theater since before the pandemic, so we were pretty excited. Of course we had to see the new Scream movie since we’re big horror fans. Critics said it had the worst rating of the whole franchise, but we had to judge that for ourselves.
We got our traditional snacks, me with the largest popcorn and soda, while my husband, who had just eaten a pound of catfish at the restaurant, still needed his nachos. I forgot the candy I bought at the dollar store in the car though.
I hadn’t been to the Aberdeen movie theater in probably fifteen years, so I was delighted to see they now have reclining chairs. I’m usually down for watching the trailers, but since we were kid-free, I took advantage of a ten-minute cat nap before the movie started.
In the end, the movie was good. It definitely wasn’t the best in the franchise, but it wasn’t the worst either, at least in my opinion. I still enjoyed it, and it had enough suspense and classic moments to keep us entertained the whole time. Honestly, it’s the seventh movie in the series—people can’t expect every single one to have a completely mind-blowing ending. Sometimes it’s just fun to sit back, eat way too much popcorn, and enjoy a good horror movie for what it is.
After that, we hit up Walmart for random things we probably didn’t need, but it was fun free-ranging through the store. Chase stocked up on his spicy Taco Bell Diablo sauce, and I got new muck boots so I can stop ruining my nice shoes when I go feed the chickens in the morning.
We even booked tickets for our next date night! We’re going to see Midwest Murder in Sioux Falls, which I’m super excited about. It’s a podcast I’ve been listening to for years and eventually got Chase into, and now we’re both obsessed.
All in all, it was a pretty perfect little date day. Nothing fancy, just time together without chasing toddlers around for a few hours. It was nice to relax, laugh, and do normal things like watch a movie and wander through Walmart at our own pace. By the time we got home we were ready to see our girls again, but it definitely reminded us how important it is to sneak away for a little time together every once in a while.
