B-H GIRLS DROP TWO TILTS

B-H GIRLS DROP TWO TILTS

Britton-Hecla’s girls basketball team dropped a pair of contests in the past week, losing to Langford Area 48-36 on Friday and to Sisseton 58-30 last week Tuesday.
Coach Terry Nelson’s club took a 4-11 mark to Clark-Willow Lake last night Tuesday, hosts Warner in a makeup contest on Friday (JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow), meets Waverly-South Shore in Waverly as part of a twin bill with the boys’ squad on Monday (JV girls 4 p.m., JV boys, varsity girls, varsity boys to follow), and travels to Hamlin for another doubleheader on Tuesday (JV girls 4 p.m., JV boys, varsity girls, varsity Boys to follow).
“We’ve hardly shot any free throws the last three games and need to get the ball inside and get better shots,” noted Nelson.  “Defense is also something that we can control, and we have to get after it.”

Langford Area 48
Britton-Hecla 36
Six of Langford Area’s 10 first half baskets were of the three-point variety that propelled the Lady Lions to a 26-14 lead at intermission, and Britton-Hecla was never able to quite dig out of that hole.
Nelson’s crew started fast, taking a 9-6 lead on a Koryn Jones three-pointer from the top of the key with 2:20 left in the opening period.  But LA’s Brynn Samson triggered a 20-5 run over the next 10 minutes that included last-second treys from Alex Darling to end both the first and second quarters, along with a pair of three-pointers from Paytyn Marlow.
Britton-Hecla hung around in the second half but could never quite get over the hump.  Karlie Zuehlke converted a three-point play and Daynika Zuehlke followed a trey with a follow shot to cut the margin to 28-24 with 1:16 left in the third stanza.  LA countered with a Brooklynn West fielder and three straight free tosses to go back up 33-24 at the break.
Daynika Zuehlke sandwiched a trey and a pair of free tosses around a Chellon Pruitt fielder to claw within four again, 35-31 with 3:17 to play.  This time LA eighth grader Josie Jensen put the Lady Lions back in charge, converting a three-point play and scoring seven points in less than a minute for a 44-34 LA lead with 1:28 remaining.
Pruitt led the Lady Braves with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jones notched eight.  Karlie Zuehlke pulled down seven boards and Maddi Micko had four steals.
Marlow topped LA scorers with 14, Darling added 11, and Jensen nine

Sisseton 58
Britton-Hecla 30
Sisseton took charge early with a 20-3 run, leading 33-9 at halftime and coasting to the win.
The visitors jumped out to an 18-6 lead at the first quarter break.  Koryn Jones opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for the Lady Braves but the local cagers would not score again for nearly nine minutes when Chellon Pruitt hit a fielder with 6:51 remaining in the third period.  By that time B-H trailed 39-11 and could never get closer than 20 points.
Daynika Zuehlke led the Lady Braves with 11 points, including a pair of treys.  Pruitt added nine counters and seven boards.  Karlie Zuehlke also pulled down seven rebounds.
